Instruction Manual

Model: Sub 1 (840918-1100) | Brand: Bose

Introduction

The Bose Sub1 powered subwoofer is designed to enhance your portable PA system with robust low-frequency output. It delivers bass frequencies down to 40 Hz, providing a full and impactful sound experience. The Sub1 features a unique 7-inch by 13-inch high-excursion RaceTrack driver, which allows for an ultra-slim enclosure while delivering performance comparable to a traditional 12-inch woofer. This design ensures powerful bass without the cumbersome size, making it highly portable.

The Sub1 is optimized for seamless integration with the Bose L1 Pro32 system through a single-cable SubMatch connection. Its versatile design also allows it to be used with various other portable PA systems via standard line inputs and outputs.

Connecting to Bose L1 Pro32 System

For seamless integration with the Bose L1 Pro32 portable line array system, use the proprietary SubMatch cable. This single cable provides both power and audio signal, simplifying your setup.

  1. Connect one end of the SubMatch cable to the 'SUBMATCH IN' port on the Sub 1.
  2. Connect the other end of the SubMatch cable to the corresponding SubMatch port on the L1 Pro32 power stand.
  3. Ensure the power cord is connected to the Sub 1 and plugged into a power outlet.

If the SubMatch cable is unavailable, you can use standard power and analog audio cables for connection.

Connecting to Other Powered Loudspeakers

The Sub 1 can be paired with other powered loudspeakers using its line input and output connections.

  1. Connect the audio output from your mixer or main PA system to the 'LINE IN 1' or 'LINE IN 2' XLR inputs on the Sub 1.
  2. If you are daisy-chaining to other loudspeakers, connect the 'LINE OUT 1' or 'LINE OUT 2' XLR outputs from the Sub 1 to the inputs of your next speaker.
  3. Ensure the power cord is connected to the Sub 1 and plugged into a power outlet.

Operating the Sub 1

The Sub 1 offers several controls for optimizing its performance within your audio setup.

Level Control

Adjust the independent sub level control knob to set the desired bass volume. This allows you to fine-tune the low-end presence to match your main speakers and the acoustic environment.

Crossover Modes

The Sub 1 features selectable crossover modes for seamless integration with your main loudspeakers. These modes determine the frequency range the subwoofer handles, ensuring a smooth transition between the bass module and your full-range speakers.

Polarity Switch

A switchable polarity control allows you to adjust the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to your main speakers. This helps to prevent phase cancellation and ensures that the bass frequencies align correctly, resulting in a tighter and more impactful sound.

Cardioid Mode

When using multiple Sub 1 units, you can enable Cardioid Mode. This feature focuses the bass output forward, reducing unwanted low-frequency energy on stage or behind the speakers. This is particularly useful for live performances to minimize microphone feedback and improve overall sound clarity for performers.

Stacking Multiple Units

For increased bass output, multiple Sub 1 units can be stacked on top of each other. When stacked, they can be connected via the SubMatch cable for simplified power and audio routing, or using standard analog audio cables.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Bose Sub 1, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior surfaces of the bass module. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or strong chemicals, as these can damage the finish.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the Sub 1 in a cool, dry place. Use the provided slip cover to protect it from dust and scratches.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid exposing the Sub 1 to extreme temperatures, high humidity, or direct sunlight for extended periods. Do not operate the unit near water or in excessively dusty environments.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked. Adequate airflow is essential to prevent overheating.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Bose Sub 1, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Check that the power cord is securely connected to both the Sub 1 and a working electrical outlet. Verify that the outlet is receiving power.
  • No Sound: Ensure all audio cables (SubMatch or XLR) are securely connected between the Sub 1 and your main PA system/mixer. Check the volume level on the Sub 1 and your main audio source. Confirm that the correct input is selected on your mixer.
  • Distorted Sound: Reduce the input level from your audio source or the Sub 1's level control to prevent clipping. Check for damaged cables.
  • Weak Bass: Verify the Sub 1's level control is set appropriately. Check the crossover settings to ensure the Sub 1 is receiving the correct low-frequency range. Adjust the polarity switch if the bass sounds thin or out of phase.
  • Excessive Bass on Stage (Feedback): If using multiple Sub 1 units, ensure Cardioid Mode is enabled to direct bass forward and reduce rearward sound projection.
