1. Introduction
This user manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and care of your RPB Safety Z-Link+ Welding Respirator Helmet with PX5 PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator). Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use and retain it for future reference. Proper understanding and adherence to these instructions are crucial for ensuring your safety and the longevity of the equipment.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in serious injury, illness, or death. This equipment is designed for professional use and requires proper training.
- Always inspect all components for damage or wear before each use. Do not use if any part is damaged.
- Ensure the PAPR unit is fully charged and the filter is correctly installed and sealed before entering contaminated environments.
- This respirator does not supply oxygen. Do not use in oxygen-deficient atmospheres (less than 19.5% oxygen).
- Do not use in atmospheres immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
- Always use the correct type of filter for the contaminants present. Consult safety data sheets (SDS) for specific hazards.
- Maintain a clean and dry environment for storage to prevent damage to electronic components and filters.
- Refer to local regulations and standards for personal protective equipment (PPE) use in your specific industry.
- The auto-darkening filter (ADF) provides eye protection against harmful UV/IR radiation even in the light state. However, always ensure the ADF is functioning correctly before welding.

4. Setup
4.1 Initial Battery Charging
Before first use, fully charge the PX5 PAPR battery. Connect the battery charger to a power outlet and then to the battery. The charging indicator light on the charger will show the charging status. A full charge typically takes several hours.

4.2 Filter Installation
The PX5 PAPR unit uses a HEPA filter for particulate filtration. Ensure the filter is correctly seated and the filter cover is securely closed to prevent air leakage.
- Open the filter compartment on the PX5 PAPR unit.
- Insert the HEPA filter, ensuring it aligns with the guides.
- Close the filter compartment cover firmly until it clicks into place.

4.3 Assembling the System
- Attach the quick release belt support to the PX5 PAPR unit.
- Thread the belt through the belt support and adjust for a comfortable fit around your waist.
- Connect one end of the quick connect breathing tube to the air outlet on the PX5 PAPR unit. Ensure it clicks securely.
- Connect the other end of the breathing tube to the air inlet on the Z-Link+ helmet. Ensure a secure connection.
- Verify the welding visor and clear grinding lens are properly installed in the helmet.

5. Operation
5.1 Pre-Use Checks
Before each use, perform the following checks:
- Check battery charge level.
- Verify filter is clean and properly installed.
- Inspect breathing tube for kinks, tears, or damage.
- Ensure helmet components (visor, lenses, head harness) are secure and undamaged.
- Perform a flow check using the provided flow meter to ensure adequate airflow.
5.2 Donning the System
- Place the PX5 PAPR unit on your back or hip, securing the belt comfortably.
- Put on the Z-Link+ helmet, adjusting the head harness for a snug but comfortable fit.
- Ensure the face seal of the helmet creates a good seal around your face.
- Turn on the PX5 PAPR unit. Listen for the fan and feel for airflow inside the helmet.
5.3 Using the Welding Visor
The Z-Link+ features a removable welding visor that clips directly onto the main visor. This allows you to lift the welding visor to check welds or for grinding tasks without removing the entire helmet.
- To lift the welding visor, gently push it upwards until it locks into the raised position.
- To lower the welding visor, gently pull it down until it clicks into the working position.
- For extended grinding, the welding visor can be easily removed at its hinge points.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Regular cleaning extends the life of your equipment and ensures proper function.
- Helmet and Visor: Wipe exterior surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. The clear grinding lens and welding visor can be cleaned with a soft cloth and lens cleaning solution.
- PAPR Unit: Wipe the exterior of the PX5 PAPR unit with a damp cloth. Ensure no water enters the air intake or electronic components.
- Breathing Tube: Clean the inside and outside of the breathing tube with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before reassembly.

6.2 Filter Replacement
Replace the HEPA filter when the airflow indicator shows reduced flow, or if the filter appears visibly dirty or damaged. The frequency of replacement depends on the usage environment and duration.
- Turn off the PAPR unit and disconnect the battery.
- Open the filter compartment.
- Remove the old filter and dispose of it according to local regulations.
- Install a new HEPA filter as described in Section 4.2.
6.3 Battery Care and Storage
- Store the battery in a cool, dry place.
- For long-term storage, charge the battery to approximately 50% capacity.
- Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently, as this can reduce its lifespan.
- Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No airflow from PAPR unit. | Battery discharged, filter clogged, unit not turned on, breathing tube kinked. | Charge battery, replace filter, turn on unit, check and straighten breathing tube. |
| Low airflow indicator active. | Clogged filter, low battery, air leak in system. | Replace filter, charge battery, check all connections for leaks. |
| Visor fogging. | Insufficient airflow, improper fit of face seal. | Ensure PAPR is on and providing adequate airflow, adjust head harness for a better seal. |
| Auto-darkening filter not darkening. | Sensors obstructed, low battery in ADF (if applicable), incorrect settings. | Clean sensors, check/replace ADF battery, verify shade settings. |
