Setup: Fitting Your Backpack

Properly fitting your Osprey Tempest 20L backpack is crucial for comfort and load distribution. Follow these steps to ensure an optimal fit:

  1. Measure Your Torso: Locate your iliac crest (the top of your hip bones) and your C7 vertebra (the most prominent bone at the base of your neck when you tilt your head forward). Measure the distance between these two points to determine your torso length. This measurement will help you select the correct pack size (WXS/S, WM/L, etc.).
  2. Load the Pack: Before fitting, load your backpack with approximately 10-20 pounds of gear (or soft items like pillows) to simulate a realistic carrying weight.
  3. Loosen All Straps: Fully loosen all webbing straps on the load lifters, harness, shoulder straps, and hipbelt buckle.
  4. Put on the Pack: Place the backpack on your back, ensuring both shoulder straps are comfortably in place.
  5. Adjust the Hipbelt: Buckle the hipbelt over your belly button. The hipbelt wings should be centered over your iliac crest. Pull both webbing straps across your body evenly until snug. The hipbelt should cover your hip bones but not extend all the way to the buckle.
  6. Tighten Shoulder Straps: Grab the webbing at the end of your shoulder straps on both sides and pull them down and back evenly. You want a nice wrap around your shoulders. The shoulder strap should end at the bottom underneath your armpit, or if you come up the line of your pant, it should align with the end of the strap.
  7. Buckle Sternum Strap: Buckle the sternum strap across your chest. Take a deep breath as you tighten it to a comfortable tension. This strap helps hold the pack in place and keeps the harness on your shoulders without overtightening.
  8. Adjust Load Lifters: Move your hands up your harness to find the two small pieces of webbing over each shoulder. Pull these up and forward. A good indicator is if these are angled at approximately 45 degrees. If they are too flat or angled too high, you may need to adjust the harness up or down for your torso length.

Operating Your Backpack

Packing and Organization
