Assembly Instructions
The MayBee beehive components feature premium dovetail joints and pre-drilled holes for straightforward assembly. A hammer, wood glue (optional, but recommended for added stability), and a drill/screwdriver will be useful.
1. Assembling the Hive Boxes (Deep Brood Box & Medium Super Box)
- Identify the four sides of a hive box (two long, two short). These pieces have dovetail joints on their ends.
- Interlock the dovetail joints of the four sides to form a rectangular box. Ensure the pieces fit snugly. Applying a small amount of wood glue to the joints before assembly can enhance durability.
- Once the box is formed, use a drill or screwdriver to install the provided screws into the pre-drilled holes on the dovetail joints. This secures the box corners.
- Repeat this process for both the Deep Brood Box and the Medium Super Box.

2. Assembling Beehive Frames and Foundations
- Each frame consists of a top bar, a bottom bar, and two side bars.
- Slide the plastic foundation (either yellow for medium frames or black for deep frames) into the grooves of the side bars.
- Attach the top and bottom bars to the side bars, ensuring the foundation is securely held within the frame.
- Use small nails to secure the frame components together. Pre-drilled holes may be present for easier nailing.
- Repeat for all 10 deep frames and 10 medium frames.
Video: This video also illustrates the assembly of the frames and foundations, showing how to insert the plastic foundation and secure the frame components.
3. Final Hive Assembly
- Place the Bottom Board on a stable, level surface.
- Insert the Entrance Reducer into the slot on the front of the Bottom Board. This can be adjusted to control the hive entrance size.
- Place the assembled Deep Brood Box on top of the Bottom Board.
- Insert the 10 assembled Deep Frames into the Deep Brood Box.
- Place the Plastic Queen Excluder on top of the Deep Brood Box. This prevents the queen from laying eggs in the honey super.
- Place the assembled Medium Super Box on top of the Queen Excluder.
- Insert the 10 assembled Medium Frames into the Medium Super Box.
- Place the Inner Cover on top of the Medium Super Box.
- Finally, place the pre-assembled Metal Top Cover on top of the Inner Cover. The metal top provides weather protection.

Setup
Proper placement of your beehive is crucial for the health and productivity of your colony.
- Location: Choose a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in warmer climates. This helps regulate hive temperature.
- Elevation: Place the hive on a stand or elevated surface (e.g., concrete blocks, a dedicated hive stand) to protect it from ground moisture, pests, and to make inspections easier.
- Orientation: The hive entrance should ideally face southeast to allow bees to start foraging early in the morning.
- Accessibility: Ensure easy access for inspections and maintenance, but also consider privacy for the bees and minimize disturbance from humans or pets.
- Water Source: Provide a nearby water source for the bees, such as a bird bath with pebbles or a shallow dish.

Operating Your Beehive
Operating a beehive involves regular inspections and understanding bee behavior. This section provides general guidance.
- Introducing Bees: Once your hive is assembled and placed, you can introduce a package of bees or a nuc (nucleus colony). Follow specific instructions from your bee supplier for introduction.
- Inspections: Regularly inspect your hive (typically every 1-2 weeks during active seasons) to check for queen presence, brood pattern, honey stores, pests, and disease. Wear appropriate protective gear.
- Adding Supers: As the colony grows and fills the deep brood box with brood and honey, you will need to add the medium super box for honey storage. Place it above the queen excluder.
- Honey Harvest: Honey can be harvested from the medium super frames once they are capped with wax. Ensure the bees have sufficient honey stores for themselves before harvesting.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity of your beehive and the health of your bee colony.
- Cleaning: The detachable bottom board allows for easy cleaning. Periodically remove debris and dead bees.
- Wax Coating: The cedarwood components are heavy wax-coated for durability and weather resistance. You can re-wax or paint your hive as needed to maintain its protective layer.
- Ventilation: The inner boards are designed with vents for better ventilation. Ensure these remain clear.
- Pest Management: Regularly check for common bee pests like Varroa mites. The entrance reducer helps protect against larger pests.

Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues that may arise with your beehive or colony. For specific bee health concerns, consult a local beekeeping expert.
- Difficulty Assembling Dovetail Joints: Ensure all pieces are correctly oriented. A rubber mallet can be used to gently tap joints into place if they are tight.
- Frames Not Fitting: Double-check that frames are assembled correctly and that the hive boxes are square.
- Bees Not Using Super: Ensure the brood box is sufficiently populated and filled before bees move into the super. Check for queen excluder placement.
- Pest Entry: Adjust the entrance reducer to a smaller opening to deter larger pests. Regularly inspect for smaller pests and implement appropriate management strategies.
