1. Introduction

The BOSS RC-500 Loop Station is a dual-track looper designed for guitarists, singer/songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists. It enables real-time composition with two independent loop tracks, features mic and stereo instrument inputs, includes onboard rhythms, and offers various Loop FX. The unit processes audio at 32-bit quality and provides up to 13 hours of stereo recording time. Loops can be stored in onboard memories, and expanded operation is possible through external controls and MIDI connectivity.

2. Package Contents

Note: A power adapter (BOSS PSA-120S) and BMIDI-5-35 adapter cable are available separately and are not included in the standard package.

3. Controls and Connectors

3.1 Front Panel Overview

The front panel provides access to recording, playback, track selection, and various settings. Familiarize yourself with the layout:

  • Track 1/2 Faders: Adjust the playback level for each loop track.
  • Display Screen: Shows current memory number, rhythm status, and menu parameters.
  • MEMORY/VALUE Knob: Selects memory locations and adjusts parameter values.
  • MIC LEVEL Knob: Controls the input gain for the microphone.
  • RHYTHM Buttons (TEMPO, ON/OFF): Control the built-in rhythm guide.
  • MEMORY Button: Accesses memory functions.
  • MENU Button: Enters the system menu for detailed settings.
  • WRITE/EXIT/ENTER Buttons: Used for saving settings, exiting menus, and confirming selections.

3.2 Rear Panel Connections

  • MIC IN (XLR): Connect a microphone. Supports phantom power.
  • INST IN A/MONO, B (1/4-inch): Connect instruments such as guitar, bass, or keyboards. Use A/MONO for mono input.
  • OUTPUT A/MONO, B (1/4-inch): Connect to an amplifier, mixer, or audio interface. Use A/MONO for mono output.
  • MIDI OUT, IN (3.5mm): Connect to MIDI devices for synchronization and control. Requires BMIDI-5-35 adapter cable (sold separately).
  • CTL 1,2/EXP (1/4-inch): Connect an external footswitch (e.g., BOSS FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7) or an expression pedal for expanded control.
  • USB Port: Connect to a computer for importing/exporting WAV files and system updates.
  • DC IN Jack: Connect a BOSS PSA-series AC adapter (sold separately).

4. Basic Setup

Follow these steps to set up your RC-500 for initial use:

  1. Power Connection: Insert the included AA batteries into the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit. Alternatively, connect a BOSS PSA-series AC adapter (sold separately) to the DC IN jack.
  2. Instrument Connection: Connect your instrument(s) to the INST IN A/MONO and/or B jacks using 1/4-inch cables. For a microphone, connect it to the MIC IN XLR jack.
  3. Output Connection: Connect the OUTPUT A/MONO and/or B jacks to your amplifier, mixer, or audio interface using 1/4-inch cables.
  4. Power On: Press the POWER button to turn on the unit.

5. Basic Operation

5.1 Recording a Loop

  1. Ensure the desired track (1 or 2) is selected using the TRACK SELECT footswitch.
  2. Press the REC/PLAY footswitch once to start recording. The REC/PLAY indicator will light red.
  3. Play your instrument or sing into the microphone.
  4. Press the REC/PLAY footswitch again to stop recording and begin playback. The indicator will turn green.

5.2 Overdubbing

While a loop is playing:

  1. Press the REC/PLAY footswitch once to enter overdub mode. The indicator will light orange.
  2. Play additional parts.
  3. Press the REC/PLAY footswitch again to exit overdub mode and continue playback.

5.3 Stopping Playback

Press the STOP footswitch once to stop the currently playing loop. Press it again to clear the loop.

5.4 Using Rhythm

The RC-500 includes various rhythm patterns:

  • Press the RHYTHM ON/OFF button to start or stop the rhythm guide.
  • Use the RHYTHM TEMPO button and MEMORY/VALUE knob to adjust the tempo.
  • Access the MENU to select different rhythm types and adjust volume.

6. Advanced Features

6.1 Memory Management

The RC-500 can store up to 99 loop memories. Use the MEMORY/VALUE knob to select a memory location and the WRITE button to save your loops and settings.

6.2 Loop FX

The unit offers various built-in Loop FX to enhance your performances. These can be accessed and configured through the MENU button.

6.3 External Control

Connect an external footswitch or expression pedal to the CTL 1,2/EXP jack for hands-free control over various functions, such as track switching, undo/redo, or effect parameters.

6.4 MIDI Connectivity

The MIDI IN/OUT ports allow synchronization with other MIDI devices, enabling complex setups and external control from MIDI controllers or sequencers.

6.5 USB Connectivity

Connect the RC-500 to your computer via USB to import or export WAV audio files. This allows for backing up your loops or loading pre-recorded audio into the unit.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping the unit or subjecting it to strong impacts.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your RC-500, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
