4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Antenna Assembly

  1. Carefully remove the antenna from its packaging.
  2. Unfold the antenna elements. The design allows the elements to pivot into their operational position. Ensure all elements are fully extended and locked into place if applicable.
  3. Verify the SL16 Female connector is securely attached to the antenna boom.

4.2 Mounting the Antenna

  1. Location: For optimal performance, install the Yagi antenna in an open area, such as an apartment balcony or rooftop, free from obstructions.
  2. Mast Compatibility: The antenna is designed to mount on a mast with a diameter between Ø30mm and Ø60mm.
  3. Orientation: The antenna works best when its elements are positioned perpendicular to the ground. This ensures proper polarization for UHF signals.
  4. Secure Mounting: Use the provided U-bolt and hardware to securely fasten the antenna to your chosen mast. Ensure all nuts are tightened to prevent movement in windy conditions. The rated wind velocity for this antenna is 60 m/s.

4.3 Connecting to Radio

  1. Connect a coaxial cable (not included) with an SL16 male (PL259) connector to the SL16 Female connector on the antenna.
  2. Route the coaxial cable to your UHF mobile radio or walkie-talkie.
  3. Connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the antenna input of your radio. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the TWAYRDIO YG03F antenna is properly installed and connected to your radio, operation is straightforward:

  • Ensure your radio is set to the correct UHF frequency within the 400-470MHz range.
  • Confirm the antenna's elements are perpendicular to the ground for optimal signal reception and transmission.
  • Perform a communication test with another radio to verify signal quality and range.
  • Adjust the direction of the Yagi antenna for best signal strength towards your desired communication target. Yagi antennas are directional, meaning they perform best when pointed towards the other station.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and performance of your antenna:

  • Periodic Inspection: Regularly check all connections, including the coaxial cable and mounting hardware, for tightness and corrosion.
  • Cleaning: Clean the antenna elements periodically with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, or environmental buildup. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Damage Check: Inspect the aluminum alloy elements for any signs of bending, cracks, or other physical damage, especially after severe weather conditions.
  • Storage: If storing the antenna for an extended period, fold the elements to reduce its footprint and protect it from damage. Store in a dry, protected environment.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your TWAYRDIO YG03F antenna, consider the following:

  • Poor Signal Quality or Range:
    • Ensure the antenna is mounted in an open area with a clear line of sight.
    • Verify the antenna elements are correctly oriented (perpendicular to the ground).
    • Check all coaxial cable connections for tightness and proper seating.
    • Inspect the coaxial cable for damage or kinks.
    • Confirm your radio is operating on the correct frequency within the antenna's range.
  • Antenna Instability:
    • Ensure the mounting U-bolt and nuts are securely tightened to the mast.
    • Verify the mast itself is stable and properly secured.
