6. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps for safe and effective replacement of your spark plug wires:
- Preparation: Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the engine is off and cool. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Identify Wires: Note the routing of the existing spark plug wires. It is crucial to replace one wire at a time to maintain correct firing order.
- Remove Old Wire (Spark Plug End): Grasp the spark plug boot, not the wire itself, and twist gently while pulling to remove it from the spark plug.
- Remove Old Wire (Distributor/Coil End): Similarly, grasp the boot at the distributor or coil pack and remove it.
- Install New Wire: Select a new KAKO spark plug wire of the same length as the one just removed. Firmly push the spark plug end onto the spark plug until you feel a positive click or resistance, ensuring a secure connection.
- Route New Wire: Route the new wire along the same path as the old one, using any wire separators or clips to keep it away from hot or moving parts.
- Connect to Distributor/Coil: Firmly push the other end of the new wire onto the corresponding terminal of the distributor or coil pack until it is fully seated.
- Repeat: Repeat steps 3-7 for each remaining spark plug wire, one at a time.
- Final Check: Once all wires are replaced, double-check all connections and ensure wires are properly routed and secured. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Test: Start the engine and listen for any misfires or unusual sounds.

7. Operating
Once installed, the spark plug wires operate as a passive component of your vehicle's ignition system. Their primary function is to reliably transfer high voltage from the ignition coils to the spark plugs. Proper installation ensures consistent electrical flow, leading to efficient engine combustion.
8. Maintenance
Regular inspection of your spark plug wires can help prevent potential issues and ensure long-term performance:
- Visual Inspection: Periodically check the wires for any signs of wear, cracks, fraying, or damage to the insulation. Look for burn marks or discoloration, which may indicate arcing.
- Connection Check: Ensure all boots are securely seated on both the spark plugs and the coil pack/distributor. Loose connections can lead to misfires.
- Routing: Verify that wires are still properly routed and not touching hot exhaust components or moving engine parts.
- Cleaning: Keep the wires clean and free from oil, grease, and dirt, which can degrade insulation over time.
Replace any damaged wires immediately to maintain optimal engine performance and prevent further damage to ignition components.
9. Troubleshooting
If you experience engine performance issues after installing new spark plug wires, consider the following:
- Engine Misfire: If the engine misfires, check that each wire is fully seated on both ends. Ensure the correct firing order was maintained during installation. A loose or incorrectly routed wire can cause a misfire.
- Rough Idling/Poor Performance: This could indicate a faulty wire, improper connection, or incorrect routing causing interference. Re-inspect all wires and connections.
- Check Engine Light: A misfire or ignition system fault can trigger the Check Engine Light. Scan for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to pinpoint the issue.
- Arcing: If you observe sparks jumping from a wire to a metal component, the insulation is compromised. Replace the affected wire immediately. This is often visible in dark conditions.
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to consult a professional mechanic.
