1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the assembly, display, and care of your Revell 85-4492 1969 Chevelle SS 396 Model Car Kit. This kit is designed for hobbyists aged 13 and up, with a skill level of 5. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning assembly to ensure a successful and enjoyable building experience.

The kit contains 125 precision-molded plastic parts, clear parts, chrome-plated parts, soft black tires, and waterslide decals. Paint and glue are not included and must be purchased separately.

2. Safety Information

  • Small Parts: This kit contains small parts which may pose a choking hazard for children under 3 years of age. Keep all parts out of reach of small children.
  • Adhesives and Paints: Use model adhesives and paints in a well-ventilated area. Avoid prolonged skin contact and inhalation of fumes. Refer to the specific safety instructions provided with your chosen glue and paint products.
  • Sharp Tools: Assembly may require the use of sharp tools such as hobby knives and clippers. Exercise caution to prevent injury. Always cut away from your body.
  • Eye Protection: Consider wearing eye protection during assembly, especially when cutting or sanding plastic parts.

3. Kit Contents

Before starting, verify that all components are present and undamaged. The kit includes:

  • Plastic parts molded in white, transparent red, and clear.
  • Chrome-plated parts.
  • Soft black tires.
  • Waterslide decal sheet with multiple pin stripe color options.
  • Assembly instructions.

Note: Paint, glue, and modeling tools are not included and must be purchased separately.

4. Assembly Instructions

Follow these steps carefully. Refer to the included diagram sheets for visual guidance. Allow adequate drying time for all glued parts before proceeding to the next step.

4.1. Preparation

  1. Carefully remove all parts from the sprues using a hobby knife or sprue cutters.
  2. Trim any excess plastic (flash) from the parts using a hobby knife or fine-grit sandpaper.
  3. Test fit parts before applying glue to ensure proper alignment.

4.2. Engine Assembly

Assemble the detailed 396 c.i. V-8 engine components. This typically involves joining engine block halves, adding cylinder heads, intake manifold, carburetor, and exhaust headers. Refer to the diagram for part numbers and orientation.

4.3. Chassis and Suspension

Construct the separate frame structure. Attach the front and rear suspension components, including axles and differential. Ensure all parts are securely glued and aligned for a straight chassis.

4.4. Interior Assembly

Assemble the interior components such as the dashboard, steering wheel, seats, and door panels. Paint interior parts before assembly for best results, following the recommended color scheme or your own preference.

4.5. Wheel and Tire Assembly

Choose between the Ralley or Magnum wheels. Mount the soft black tires onto the chosen wheel rims. Attach the assembled wheels to the chassis axles. Ensure the tampo printed tires are oriented correctly.

4.6. Body Assembly and Painting

Assemble the main body components. It is recommended to paint the body before attaching smaller details like chrome trim, lights, and windows. Apply paint in thin, even coats for a smooth finish. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly.

4.7. Decal Application

Once the paint is fully dry, apply the waterslide decals. Cut out each decal carefully. Dip the decal in lukewarm water for 10-20 seconds until it slides freely from the backing paper. Position the decal on the model and gently slide the backing paper away. Use a soft cloth or cotton swab to carefully blot away excess water and smooth out any air bubbles. Allow decals to dry completely.

4.8. Final Assembly

Attach the completed interior, engine, and chassis to the painted body. Secure all remaining chrome parts, clear window pieces, and any other small details. Ensure all connections are firm.

5. Display and Care

5.1. Display

Once assembled, your model car is ready for display. Choose a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity to prevent damage or fading.

5.2. Cleaning

To clean your model, gently dust it with a soft, dry brush or a microfiber cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the paint and plastic. For stubborn dust, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed immediately by a dry cloth.

6. Maintenance

Model kits generally require minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect your model for any loose parts. If a part becomes detached, reattach it using appropriate model glue. Store the model in a dust-free environment, such as a display case, to preserve its condition.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Parts Not Fitting: Ensure all flash has been removed from the parts. Test fit without glue first. If necessary, gently sand or trim small amounts of plastic for a better fit.
  • Decals Not Adhering: Ensure the surface is clean and dry. Use a decal setting solution to help decals conform to irregular surfaces and improve adhesion.
  • Paint Issues: If paint appears uneven or clumpy, ensure the paint was properly mixed and applied in thin coats. Humidity can affect drying and finish; paint in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Missing Parts: If you believe a part is missing, carefully re-check the sprues and packaging. If still missing, contact Revell customer support with your kit number and the specific part number.
