5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter while using the INNOVA 3170RS scanner.

5.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Ensure the scanner is firmly connected to the vehicle's OBD-II port.
  • Verify the vehicle's ignition is in the 'ON' position (engine off).
  • Check the internal batteries (if installed) for proper insertion and charge. While the device can draw power from the OBD-II port, functional batteries can sometimes aid in initial power-up or stability.

5.2 Communication Errors / Vehicle Not Detected

  • Confirm the vehicle's ignition is 'ON'.
  • Ensure the cable connection to the OBD-II port is secure.
  • Verify the vehicle is OBD2 compliant (1996 or newer for most vehicles) or that the correct OBD1 adapter is being used for older models.
  • Try connecting the scanner to a different compatible vehicle to rule out an issue with the scanner itself.

5.3 Device Causing Vehicle Malfunction (CAN Bus Short)

In rare instances, a diagnostic tool may cause unexpected vehicle behavior, such as the engine dying or multiple dashboard warning lights illuminating, particularly if there is an internal short in the tool's connector affecting the vehicle's CAN bus. If this occurs:

  1. Immediately disconnect the INNOVA 3170RS scanner from the vehicle's OBD-II port.
  2. Turn the vehicle's ignition off, then back on, and attempt to start the engine. Disconnecting the faulty tool should allow the vehicle's systems to reset and function normally.
  3. If the vehicle returns to normal operation after disconnecting the scanner, this indicates a potential issue with the scanner's connector or internal circuitry. Contact customer support for assistance.
