Important Safety Instructions

Read and understand all instructions before using this product. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious personal injury.

• Eye Protection: Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1.
• Hearing Protection: Wear hearing protection during operation.
• Foot Protection: Wear heavy long pants, long sleeves, boots, and gloves. Do not wear loose clothing, short pants, sandals, or go barefoot.
• Clear Work Area: Keep children, bystanders, and animals at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from the work area.
• Battery Safety: Use only BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX batteries and chargers. Do not charge the battery in rain or wet conditions.
• Inspect Tool: Before each use, inspect the tool for damaged parts, loose fasteners, or any other condition that may affect its safe operation.
• Avoid Wet Conditions: Do not operate the trimmer in wet grass or damp conditions.
• Proper Handling: Hold the trimmer firmly with both hands. Maintain proper footing and balance.

Setup and Assembly

1. Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect the tool for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. Retain packaging materials until you are satisfied with the product's condition.

2. Attaching the Guard

The guard must be attached before operating the trimmer. Align the guard with the slots on the trimmer head. Secure it in place using the provided screw and a Phillips head screwdriver. Ensure it is firmly attached.

3. Battery Charging and Installation

The battery pack (LB2X4020) is not fully charged at the time of purchase. Before first use, charge the battery completely. Refer to the separate battery charger manual for detailed charging instructions.

• To install the battery: Slide the battery pack into the tool's battery port until it clicks securely into place.
• To remove the battery: Press the battery release button and pull the battery pack out of the tool.

4. Adjusting the Auxiliary Handle and Shaft Length

Adjust the auxiliary handle for comfortable operation. Loosen the knob on the handle, position it, and then tighten the knob. The shaft length can also be adjusted by twisting the collar and extending or retracting the shaft to your desired length, then re-tightening the collar.

Operating Instructions

1. Starting and Stopping the Trimmer

• To start: Ensure the battery is installed. Press the lock-off button and then squeeze the trigger switch.
• To stop: Release the trigger switch.

2. Speed Settings

This trimmer features two speed settings. Use the speed selector switch to choose between low speed for lighter tasks and extended battery life, or high speed for tougher weeds and faster cutting.

3. Trimming Techniques

Hold the trimmer at a comfortable angle, keeping the cutting head parallel to the ground. Use a sweeping motion to cut grass and weeds. Avoid hitting hard objects like rocks, fences, or concrete, as this can damage the line and the tool.

4. Edging Function

The LST522 can easily convert from a string trimmer to a wheeled edger. To convert, rotate the head 90 degrees. The integrated wheel assists in guiding the trimmer along edges for a clean, precise cut.

5. Automatic Line Feed

This trimmer features an automatic line feed system. When the line wears down, it will automatically extend more line as needed. If the line does not feed, ensure the spool is correctly installed and not tangled.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Trimmer

After each use, disconnect the battery and clean the trimmer. Remove any grass, dirt, or debris from the cutting head, guard, and air vents using a brush or cloth. Do not use water or cleaning solutions directly on the electrical components.

2. Replacing the Trimmer Line Spool

When the trimmer line runs out, replace the spool with a genuine BLACK+DECKER replacement spool. Follow these steps:

1. Disconnect the battery pack.
2. Press the tabs on the spool cap and remove the cap.
3. Remove the empty spool.
4. Place the new spool onto the spindle, ensuring the line is threaded through the eyelet.
5. Replace the spool cap, ensuring it clicks into place.

3. Battery Care and Storage

Store the battery pack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, charge the battery partially (around 50%) and recharge every 6 months. Do not store the battery pack connected to the tool.
