4. Operating the Chronograph
Your Timex Chicago Chronograph features a precise stopwatch function. The large second hand on the main dial is dedicated to the chronograph, while the running second hand for the time of day is located on the sub-dial at 6 o'clock. The sub-dial at 10 o'clock measures elapsed minutes (up to 30 minutes), and the sub-dial at 2 o'clock measures elapsed 1/10th of a second.
Video: This official Timex video demonstrates how to use the chronograph functions, including starting, stopping, taking split times, and resetting the chronograph hands.
4.1. Starting and Stopping the Chronograph
- To start the chronograph, press the top pusher. The chronograph second hand will begin to move.
- To stop the chronograph, press the top pusher again. The elapsed time will be displayed.
- If the chronograph is left running, it will automatically stop after 4 hours to conserve battery life.
4.2. Taking Split Times
While the chronograph is running, you can record intermediate (split) times without stopping the main timing:
- To take a split time, press the bottom pusher while the chronograph is running. The hands will pause, allowing you to read the elapsed time. The chronograph continues to measure time in the background.
- To resume the chronograph and catch up to the ongoing time, press the bottom pusher again. The hands will quickly advance to the current elapsed time.
4.3. Resetting the Chronograph
After stopping the chronograph, you can reset it to zero:
- Ensure the chronograph is stopped (press the top pusher if it's running).
- Press the bottom pusher. All three chronograph hands will return to their starting (zero) positions.
5. Indiglo Backlight Feature
Your Timex watch is equipped with the Indiglo backlight for illumination in low-light conditions.
5.1. Activating Indiglo
- To illuminate the dial, simply press in on the crown. The backlight will activate for a few seconds.
5.2. Night Mode
Night Mode keeps the Indiglo backlight active for several seconds whenever the crown or any pusher is pressed, for a duration of four hours.
- To activate Night Mode, press and hold the crown for approximately 4 seconds. The dial will flash to indicate Night Mode is active.
- To deactivate Night Mode, press and hold the crown again for approximately 4 seconds.
6. Care and Maintenance
Proper care will help maintain the appearance and functionality of your Timex watch.
- Cleaning: Wipe the watch case and crystal with a soft, damp cloth. For the leather strap, avoid excessive moisture and harsh chemicals.
- Water Resistance: This watch is water resistant to 50 meters (165 feet). It is suitable for short periods of recreational swimming but is not recommended for diving or snorkeling. Do not press any buttons underwater unless your watch is rated for 200 meters water resistance.

Figure 3: Water resistance guidelines for Timex watches. This model is suitable for light swimming but not diving.
- Battery: The watch uses 1 Lithium Metal battery (included). Battery replacement should ideally be performed by a qualified watch technician to ensure water resistance is maintained.
- Temperature Extremes: Avoid exposing your watch to extreme temperatures, as this can affect battery life and movement accuracy.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your watch, refer to the following common solutions:
7.1. Chronograph Hands Not Aligning to Zero
If, after resetting, the chronograph hands (main second hand, minute sub-dial at 10 o'clock, or 1/10th second sub-dial at 2 o'clock) do not return precisely to the 12 o'clock (zero) position, they may need recalibration:
- Calibrating the Chronograph Minute Hand (10 o'clock sub-dial):
- Pull the crown out one click to the first position.
- Press and hold the bottom pusher to quickly advance the minute hand. Tap the bottom pusher for incremental adjustments.
- Align the minute hand to the 12 o'clock (zero) position.
- Calibrating the Chronograph Second Hand (main dial) and 1/10th Second Hand (2 o'clock sub-dial):
- Pull the crown out two clicks to the second position.
- Press and hold the top pusher to quickly advance the second hand and 1/10th second hand. Tap the top pusher for incremental adjustments.
- Align both hands to the 12 o'clock (zero) position.
- Once all chronograph hands are aligned, push the crown back to its original position.
7.2. Watch Not Running or Losing Time
- Check if the crown is fully pushed in. If it is pulled out, the watch will not run.
- The battery may need replacement. Consult a professional watch repair service.
