1. Introduction

The Nektar MIDIFLEX4 is a versatile 4-port USB MIDI interface designed to integrate seamlessly into any MIDI setup across macOS, Windows, and iOS operating systems. This device offers flexible MIDI connectivity, allowing its 4 MIDI ports to be configured as 1 input / 3 outputs, 2 inputs / 2 outputs, or 4 outputs. Its USB class-compliant design ensures quick and easy setup without the need for dedicated drivers.

Key features include automatic port detection, LED indicators for port status, and stand-alone MIDI merge and split functionalities. The MIDIFLEX4 also supports expansion by connecting multiple units for increased MIDI port capacity.

2. Setup and Installation

The MIDIFLEX4 is designed for straightforward setup due to its USB class-compliant nature. No special drivers are required for most operating systems.

2.1 Connecting to Your Computer or iOS Device

  1. Connect the MIDIFLEX4 to an available USB port on your computer (macOS or Windows) or iOS device (using an appropriate adapter, not included).
  2. The device will be automatically recognized by your operating system.
  3. Open your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software or any MIDI application. The MIDIFLEX4 ports will appear in the MIDI settings of your software.

2.2 Connecting MIDI Gear

Connect your external MIDI instruments, controllers, or other MIDI devices to the MIDI ports on the MIDIFLEX4. The interface features automatic port detection, which identifies whether a port is configured as an input or an output.

The 4 LEDs on the top panel indicate the current configuration (input or output) for each port.

2.3 Expanding Your Setup

For setups requiring more MIDI ports, simply connect additional MIDIFLEX4 units to your computer. Each unit will be recognized, expanding your available MIDI input and output capabilities.

3. Operation

3.1 MIDI Port Configuration

When connected to a computer, the MIDIFLEX4's ports can be configured within your DAW or MIDI software. The device supports the following configurations:

  • 1 Input / 3 Outputs
  • 2 Inputs / 2 Outputs
  • 4 Outputs

The automatic port detection feature simplifies this process by identifying the type of MIDI connection (input or output) made to each port.

3.2 Stand-Alone MIDI Merge and Split Functions

The MIDIFLEX4 can operate in stand-alone mode without a computer, functioning as a MIDI merge or split box. This requires an external power supply (not included) connected to the USB port.

  1. Connect an external 5V DC power supply to the USB port of the MIDIFLEX4.
  2. Press the Mode button located on the side of the unit to cycle through the available stand-alone modes.
  3. The MIDIFLEX4 supports:
    • 2-to-1 MIDI Merge: Combines MIDI data from two input sources into a single output stream.
    • 1-to-3 MIDI Split: Routes MIDI data from one input source to three separate output destinations.

4. Included Software: Bitwig 8-Track

The MIDIFLEX4 includes a license for Bitwig 8-Track, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that allows you to produce, perform, and design sounds. This software provides a comprehensive environment for music creation.

  • Features: Over 50 software instruments and effects.
  • Track Limit: Supports up to 8 audio or MIDI project tracks.
  • VST Support: Compatible with third-party VST plug-ins.
  • Bitwig Essentials Package: Includes a selection of loops, clips, and samples to assist with getting started.

5. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Nektar MIDIFLEX4, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
  • Environment: Operate and store the device in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
  • Handling: Handle the unit with care to prevent physical damage. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Cables: Ensure all cables are connected securely and are not strained or bent sharply.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Nektar MIDIFLEX4, refer to the following troubleshooting steps:
