1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your MAG M27BS Moving Magnet Cartridge with Diamond Stylus. This high-quality cartridge is designed to deliver excellent sound performance and is compatible with SANSUI SR 717, SR 5090, and SR 636 turntable models.

The M27BS features a stereo spherical diamond tip and offers strong tracking ability, ensuring a superb audio experience.

2. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and to prevent damage to the cartridge or your records. Please follow these steps carefully.

2.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the cartridge and any accessories from its packaging. Ensure all components, including the mounting screws, are present.

2.2 Mounting the Cartridge

  1. Ensure your turntable is powered off and unplugged.
  2. If replacing an old cartridge, carefully remove it from the headshell. Note the wiring connections.
  3. Attach the MAG M27BS cartridge to your turntable's headshell using the provided mounting screws. Ensure it is securely fastened but do not overtighten.
  4. Connect the tonearm wires to the corresponding pins on the back of the cartridge. Standard color coding is typically:
    • Red (R): Right channel hot
    • Green (RG): Right channel ground
    • White (L): Left channel hot
    • Blue (LG): Left channel ground

2.3 Tonearm Balance and Tracking Force

After mounting, it is essential to balance your tonearm and set the correct tracking force.

  1. With the stylus guard on, adjust the tonearm counterweight until the tonearm floats freely and level.
  2. Set the tracking force dial (if present) to zero without moving the counterweight.
  3. Adjust the counterweight or tracking force dial to the recommended tracking force. For the MAG M27BS, the recommended tracking force is 3.0 grams. The acceptable range is 2.5 to 3.5 grams.
  4. Set the anti-skate control to match the tracking force setting.

3. Operating Instructions

Once installed and properly adjusted, your MAG M27BS cartridge is ready for use. Always handle your records and stylus with care to ensure longevity and optimal sound quality.

  • Ensure records are clean before playing to prevent dust and debris from damaging the stylus.
  • Gently lower the tonearm onto the record using the cueing lever. Avoid dropping the tonearm manually.
  • When finished playing, use the cueing lever to lift the tonearm and return it to its rest.

4. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will help preserve the life of your stylus and maintain sound fidelity.

  • Stylus Cleaning: Periodically clean the stylus tip using a soft stylus brush, brushing gently from back to front (in the direction of play). Do not brush side-to-side. Specialized stylus cleaning fluids can also be used sparingly.
  • Cartridge Body: Keep the cartridge body free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it clean.
  • Stylus Guard: Always engage the stylus guard when the turntable is not in use or when moving the tonearm to prevent accidental damage to the stylus.

5. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your MAG M27BS cartridge, consider the following common solutions:

  • Poor Sound Quality / Distortion:
    • Check that the tracking force is set correctly (3.0g).
    • Ensure the stylus is clean and free of debris.
    • Verify that the cartridge is securely mounted and the tonearm wires are correctly connected.
    • Inspect the stylus for any visible damage or bends.
  • Skipping:
    • Confirm the tracking force is set correctly.
    • Check the anti-skate setting.
    • Ensure the record is clean and free of scratches.
    • Verify the turntable is level.
  • No Sound or Sound from One Channel:
    • Check all tonearm wire connections to the cartridge and the turntable's internal wiring.
    • Ensure the amplifier/receiver input is correctly selected and cables are securely connected.
