vidaXL Pool Sand Filter Instruction Manual

Model: 92246 | Brand: vidaXL

Important Safety Information

Please read this manual carefully before installing, operating, or performing maintenance on your vidaXL Pool Sand Filter. Failure to follow these instructions could result in property damage, serious injury, or death. Keep this manual for future reference.

General Safety Precautions:

  • Always disconnect power to the pump before servicing the filter or valve.
  • Do not operate the filter if any part is damaged or missing.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free before operation.
  • This filter operates under pressure. Improper installation or use can cause the filter tank to separate, leading to severe injury or property damage.
  • Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of 3.5 bar (50 psi).
  • Keep children away from the filter system during operation and maintenance.
  • Only use the recommended filter media (pool filter sand).

Product Overview

The vidaXL Pool Sand Filter is designed to effectively filter and purify your pool or spa water using sand as a filter medium. Its robust high-density polyethylene construction ensures durability and a long service life. The integrated multiport valve allows for easy selection of various operational modes.

Setup and Installation

Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect all parts for any signs of damage. If any parts are damaged or missing, do not proceed with assembly and contact customer support.

Site Selection

Choose a level, firm surface for the filter, preferably close to the pool pump and electrical outlet. Ensure the location is protected from direct sunlight and freezing temperatures. Allow sufficient space around the filter for maintenance and servicing.

Assembly Instructions

Figure 3: The main components of the sand filter, including the blue tank, black multiport valve, and internal standpipe, before assembly.

  1. Prepare the Filter Tank: Ensure the internal standpipe and laterals are correctly installed at the bottom of the filter tank.
  2. Add Filter Media: Carefully add the appropriate amount of pool filter sand (not included) into the filter tank. Refer to the filter's capacity for the correct sand volume. Ensure the standpipe is centered during this process to prevent sand from entering it.
  3. Install Multiport Valve: Place the multiport valve onto the top of the filter tank, ensuring the O-ring is properly seated and the valve aligns with the standpipe. Secure the valve to the tank using the provided clamp or bolts.
  4. Connect Plumbing: Connect the pool pump's discharge port to the "PUMP" port on the multiport valve. Connect the "RETURN" port on the valve to the pool's return line. Connect the "WASTE" port to a suitable waste disposal line or area.
  5. Check for Leaks: Before starting the pump, ensure all connections are tight and secure.

Operating Instructions

The multiport valve allows you to select different operational modes for your sand filter. Always turn off the pump before changing the valve position.

Multiport valve handle and labeled positions

Figure 4: Detail of the multiport valve handle and its labeled positions for various filtration functions.

Multiport Valve Positions:

PositionFunctionDescription
FILTERNormal FiltrationWater flows through the sand bed, trapping debris, and returns to the pool. This is the primary operating mode.
BACKWASHCleaning FilterReverses water flow through the sand bed to flush trapped debris out the waste port. Use when pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above starting pressure.
RINSERinse Sand BedUsed after backwashing to settle the sand bed and flush any remaining dirty water to waste before returning to FILTER mode.
WINTERWinterizing/ClosedSeals off all ports, used for winterizing or when the filter is not in use for extended periods.

Starting the Filter:

  1. Ensure the filter tank is filled with water (if not already).
  2. Set the multiport valve to the FILTER position.
  3. Turn on the pool pump. Allow the system to prime and water to flow.
  4. Note the initial pressure gauge reading. This is your clean filter operating pressure.

Maintenance

Backwashing the Filter:

Backwash your filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure, or when water flow to the pool noticeably decreases.

  1. Turn off the pool pump.
  2. Rotate the multiport valve handle to the BACKWASH position.
  3. Turn on the pool pump. Observe the sight glass (if present) or the waste line until the water runs clear (typically 2-3 minutes).
  4. Turn off the pool pump.

Rinsing the Filter:

After backwashing, always rinse the filter to settle the sand bed and prevent dirty water from returning to the pool.

  1. With the pump off, rotate the multiport valve handle to the RINSE position.
  2. Turn on the pool pump for 30-60 seconds.
  3. Turn off the pool pump.
  4. Rotate the multiport valve handle back to the FILTER position.
  5. Turn on the pool pump to resume normal filtration.

Winterizing the Filter:

For areas with freezing temperatures, proper winterization is crucial to prevent damage.

  1. Perform a thorough backwash and rinse cycle.
  2. Turn off the pool pump and disconnect power.
  3. Drain all water from the filter tank by opening the drain plug at the bottom.
  4. Close-up of the drain plug on the sand filter tank

Figure 5: Close-up view of the drain plug located at the bottom of the filter tank, used for emptying water.

  5. Remove the multiport valve and store it in a dry, protected area.
  6. Cover the filter tank to protect it from elements.

Troubleshooting

Refer to the table below for common issues and their potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Low Water FlowClogged filter sand; pump basket or skimmer basket clogged; pump impeller clogged; air leak in suction line.Backwash and rinse filter; clean pump and skimmer baskets; inspect and clean pump impeller; check all suction line connections for leaks.
Cloudy Pool WaterFilter needs backwashing; improper water chemistry; insufficient filtration time; damaged internal filter components.Backwash and rinse filter; test and adjust pool chemistry; increase pump run time; inspect filter internals for damage.
High Pressure Gauge ReadingFilter sand is dirty and needs backwashing; return lines are restricted.Perform backwash and rinse cycle; check return lines for obstructions.
Water Leaking from ValveO-rings or gaskets are worn or improperly seated; valve body cracked.Inspect and replace O-rings/gaskets; contact customer support for replacement valve if cracked.
