Victory Amplification V40 Deluxe

Victory Amplification V40 Deluxe The Duchess 40-watt Guitar Head User Manual

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation of your Victory Amplification V40 Deluxe The Duchess 40-watt Guitar Head. Please read these instructions thoroughly before connecting or operating the amplifier. Retain this manual for future reference.

The V40 Deluxe is a versatile 40-watt tube amplifier head, featuring a hybrid American and British tone profile, an effects loop, low-power mode, spring reverb, and tremolo. It is designed for guitar use and delivers a rich, dynamic sound.

Setup

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove the amplifier from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage that may have occurred during transit. Report any damage to your dealer immediately.

2. Power Connection

Ensure the amplifier's power switch is in the 'OFF' position. Connect the supplied power cord to the amplifier's IEC inlet and then to a grounded AC power outlet of the correct voltage (115V or 230V, as indicated on the rear panel). Verify the mains fuse rating matches the local voltage requirements.

3. Speaker Connection

Crucial: Always connect the amplifier to a speaker cabinet before powering on. Failure to do so can cause severe damage to the amplifier. Match the impedance of your speaker cabinet(s) to the appropriate speaker output jack on the amplifier's rear panel (4Ω, 8Ω, or 16Ω). Use a high-quality, unshielded speaker cable for this connection.

4. Guitar Input

Connect your guitar to the 'INPUT' jack on the front panel using a standard instrument cable.

5. Footswitch Connection

Connect the supplied footswitch to the 'FOOTSWITCH BY-PASS TREMOLO/REVERB' jack on the rear panel. This footswitch allows remote activation of the Tremolo and Reverb effects.

6. Effects Loop (FX LOOP)

The V40 Deluxe features a series effects loop. Connect the 'SEND' jack to the input of your external effects unit and the output of your effects unit to the 'RETURN' jack. This loop is ideal for time-based effects like delay and modulation.

Operating Instructions

1. Powering On/Off

  1. Ensure all connections (power, speaker, guitar) are secure.
  2. Set the 'VOLUME' and 'MASTER VOLUME' controls to their minimum positions.
  3. Flip the 'ON' switch to the 'PREHEAT' position. This allows the tubes to warm up gently.
  4. After approximately 30-60 seconds, flip the switch to the 'ON' position. The amplifier is now ready for use.
  5. To power off, reverse the sequence: 'ON' to 'PREHEAT', then 'PREHEAT' to 'OFF'.

2. Front Panel Controls

  • INPUT: Standard 1/4" jack for guitar connection.
  • VOLUME: Controls the gain of the preamp section, affecting the amount of overdrive.
  • TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency response.
  • MIDDLE: Adjusts the mid-range frequency response.
  • BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency response.
  • VOICE I / VOICE II: A toggle switch that alters the amplifier's voicing. Voice I typically offers a more open, American-style clean tone, while Voice II provides a tighter, more British-style response with increased gain.
  • REVERB TONE: Adjusts the tonal character of the spring reverb.
  • REVERB VOLUME: Controls the overall level of the spring reverb effect.
  • MASTER VOLUME: Controls the overall output volume of the amplifier.
  • TREMOLO SPEED: Adjusts the rate of the tremolo effect.
  • TREMOLO DEPTH: Adjusts the intensity of the tremolo effect.
  • OFF / PREHEAT / ON: Power switch for the amplifier.

3. Low-Power Mode

The V40 Deluxe features a low-power mode switch on the rear panel. This switch reduces the amplifier's output wattage, allowing for earlier power tube saturation and a different feel at lower volumes. Consult the rear panel for the exact switch location and settings (e.g., 40W/7W or similar).

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

Disconnect the amplifier from power before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and controls.

2. Tube Replacement

Vacuum tubes have a finite lifespan and will eventually need replacement. If you notice a decrease in performance, excessive noise, or inconsistent tone, it may be time to replace the tubes. This procedure should ideally be performed by a qualified technician. The V40 Deluxe uses specific types of preamp (e.g., 12AX7) and power amp (e.g., 6L6) tubes. Refer to the rear panel or a qualified technician for exact tube types and biasing instructions.

3. Fuse Replacement

If the amplifier fails to power on, check the mains fuse located on the rear panel. Always replace a blown fuse with one of the exact same type and rating. Incorrect fuse replacement can lead to serious damage or fire hazard. If fuses blow repeatedly, consult a qualified technician.

4. General Care

Avoid exposing the amplifier to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating. Transport the amplifier carefully to prevent physical damage.
