Setup Instructions
1. Unpacking and Inspection
- Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Inspect the aquarium glass and all accessories for any signs of damage. Do not proceed with setup if any damage is found.
- Rinse the aquarium and all filter media components thoroughly with clean water. Do not use soap or detergents.
2. Placement
- Choose a sturdy, level surface capable of supporting the full weight of the aquarium when filled with water, substrate, and decorations.
- Place the included bottom insulation pad beneath the aquarium to protect both the tank and the surface it rests on.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as this can lead to excessive algae growth and temperature fluctuations.
- Ensure there is easy access to electrical outlets for the pump and any optional accessories.
3. Aquarium Assembly (Filter System)
The aquarium features a built-in filter compartment. Follow these steps to set up the filtration system:
- Place the sponge filters into the designated slots within the filter compartment.
- Add the bio balls and carbon media into their respective sections within the filter compartment.
- Install the Quiet One submersible pump into its designated area within the filter compartment, ensuring the outlet nozzle is correctly positioned for direct jet flow.
- Route the pump's power cord neatly, ensuring it does not interfere with the filter media or water flow.

Figure 5: Overhead perspective of the filter compartment, showing the various sections for filter media and pump placement.
Figure 6: Close-up view of the filter area, illustrating the proper arrangement of filter media within the compartments.
4. Initial Water Fill and Conditioning
- Add decorations and substrate to the aquarium as desired.
- Carefully fill the aquarium with water. Ensure the water level is sufficient for the pump to operate correctly, typically covering the pump intake.
- Add an appropriate water conditioner to neutralize chlorine and chloramines in the tap water. Follow the conditioner manufacturer's instructions for dosage.
- Plug in the pump and allow it to run for a few hours to circulate the water and begin the filtration process.
5. Cycling the Aquarium (Important)
Before adding fish, it is crucial to cycle your aquarium to establish beneficial bacteria that convert harmful waste products. This process typically takes several weeks. Research the 'nitrogen cycle' for aquariums for detailed guidance.
6. Adding Livestock
Once the aquarium is fully cycled and stable:
- Equalize the temperature of the fish's transport water with the aquarium water by floating the sealed bag in the aquarium for 15-20 minutes.
- Gradually acclimate the fish to the aquarium water parameters before releasing them into the tank.
Operating Instructions
Filter System Operation
The built-in filter system continuously circulates and purifies the aquarium water. The Quiet One submersible pump draws water into the filter compartment, where it passes through mechanical (sponge), biological (bio balls), and chemical (carbon media) filtration before being returned to the main tank via the direct jet flow nozzle.
- Ensure the pump is always fully submerged when operating to prevent damage.
- The direct jet flow helps with surface agitation and oxygen exchange.
Water Level
Maintain the water level near the top of the aquarium, ensuring the filter intake is fully submerged and the pump operates efficiently. Low water levels can cause the pump to run dry, leading to damage or reduced performance.
Maintenance
Routine Cleaning
- Daily: Check water temperature and observe fish behavior.
- Weekly: Perform a 10-20% water change. Use a gravel vacuum to remove debris from the substrate. Clean the inside of the glass with an aquarium-safe algae scrubber.
- Monthly: Rinse sponge filters in old aquarium water (never tap water, as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria). Replace carbon media every 2-4 weeks, as it becomes exhausted.
Filter Media Replacement
- Sponge Filters: Rinse regularly. Replace only when they begin to break down or become too clogged to clean effectively, typically every 3-6 months.
- Bio Balls: These rarely need replacement. If they become excessively dirty, rinse them gently in old aquarium water.
- Carbon Media: Replace every 2-4 weeks to maintain chemical filtration effectiveness.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pump not circulating water / Weak flow | Clogged intake, air in pump, low water level, dirty impeller. | Check water level. Clean pump intake and impeller. Ensure no air bubbles are trapped. |
| Cloudy water | New tank syndrome (bacterial bloom), overfeeding, insufficient filtration, decaying organic matter. | Perform partial water changes. Reduce feeding. Ensure filter media is clean and functioning. Allow time for beneficial bacteria to establish. |
| Excessive algae growth | Too much light, excess nutrients (nitrates/phosphates). | Reduce lighting duration. Perform regular water changes. Avoid overfeeding. Consider adding live plants. |
| Pump is noisy | Air trapped, impeller obstruction, pump not seated correctly. | Gently shake pump to release air. Clean impeller. Ensure pump is securely placed in its compartment. |
