Model: RN-AA0808E | Brand: ORIENT

Introduction

Welcome to your new ORIENT RN-AA0808E automatic watch. This timepiece combines classic dive-style aesthetics with reliable mechanical movement. This manual will guide you through its features, setup, and care to ensure long-lasting performance and enjoyment.

Initial Setup

Unboxing and Inspection

Carefully remove the watch from its packaging. Inspect the watch for any visible damage or manufacturing defects before proceeding with setup.

Screw-Down Crown Operation

Your watch features a screw-down crown for enhanced water resistance. Proper operation is essential for maintaining its water-resistant properties.

A diagram illustrating the three positions of the screw-down crown: locked, unscrewed for winding/date adjustment, and pulled out for time setting.

  1. To Unlock: Rotate the crown counter-clockwise until it springs free from the case.
  2. To Lock: Gently push the crown inwards towards the watch case while rotating it clockwise until it is securely tightened. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads.

Winding the Watch

This is an automatic mechanical watch. Before initial use or if the watch has stopped, manually wind it by rotating the unlocked crown clockwise approximately 30-40 times. This builds up a sufficient power reserve. The watch will then continue to wind itself through the natural motion of your wrist during wear.

Setting the Time and Date

Ensure the crown is unlocked and in the neutral position (Position 1).

  1. To Set the Date: Gently pull the crown out to the first click (Position 2). Rotate the crown clockwise to adjust the date.
  2. To Set the Day: While the crown is in the first click (Position 2), rotate the crown counter-clockwise to adjust the day.
  3. To Set the Time: Pull the crown out to the second click (Position 3). Rotate the crown to move the hour and minute hands. Ensure you set the correct AM/PM for the date and day change to occur at midnight.
  4. Once the time, date, and day are set, push the crown back to Position 1 and screw it down securely.

Important Note:

Avoid setting the date or day between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM, as this can damage the watch's movement. If adjustment is needed during this period, first set the time outside this range (e.g., to 6:00 AM), adjust the date/day, then reset the time to the current hour.

Bracelet Adjustment

The metal bracelet can be adjusted by adding or removing links to achieve a comfortable fit. This procedure typically requires specialized tools and is best performed by a qualified watchmaker or jeweler to prevent damage to the bracelet or clasp.

Operation

Automatic Movement

Your ORIENT RN-AA0808E is powered by an automatic mechanical movement. It gains power from the natural motion of your wrist. When fully wound, it has a power reserve that allows it to run for approximately 40 hours without additional movement. Consistent wear will keep the watch running without manual winding.

Water Resistance

This watch is rated for 30 meters (3 ATM) of water resistance. This means it is suitable for everyday use and can withstand splashes, rain, or brief immersion in water (e.g., hand washing). It is not designed for swimming, diving, showering, or any water sports, as the water pressure can exceed the seal's capacity. Always ensure the screw-down crown is securely tightened before any contact with water.

Unidirectional Rotating Bezel

The watch features a unidirectional rotating bezel, which can be used to measure elapsed time, typically for up to 60 minutes. To use, rotate the bezel counter-clockwise to align the zero marker with the minute hand. As time passes, the minute hand's position on the bezel will indicate the elapsed time. The unidirectional design prevents accidental rotation in the wrong direction, which could lead to an overestimation of elapsed time.

Care and Maintenance

Cleaning

To maintain the appearance of your watch, wipe the case and bracelet regularly with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, ensuring the crown is securely screwed down. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the watch's finish or seals.

Crystal Care

The watch features a durable sapphire crystal, which is highly scratch-resistant. However, it is not entirely scratch-proof. Avoid impacts and contact with extremely hard or sharp surfaces to prevent potential damage.

Storage

When not wearing the watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and strong magnetic fields. Strong magnetic fields (e.g., from speakers, refrigerators, or certain electronic devices) can affect the accuracy of mechanical movements.

Service

For optimal performance and longevity, it is recommended to have your automatic watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker every 3-5 years. This typically includes cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment of the movement, as well as checking and replacing seals to maintain water resistance.

Troubleshooting

Watch Not Running

If the watch has stopped, ensure it is sufficiently wound. Manually wind it using the crown (30-40 turns clockwise with the crown unlocked) or wear it for several hours to allow the automatic winding mechanism to build power. If the watch still does not run after winding, it may require professional inspection.

Inaccurate Time

Minor variations in accuracy are normal for mechanical watches (typically within +/- 15-30 seconds per day). If the watch is consistently gaining or losing significant time (e.g., more than +/- 30 seconds per day), it may require adjustment by a professional watchmaker. Strong magnetic fields can also affect accuracy; keep the watch away from magnets.

Date/Day Not Changing

Ensure the time is set correctly, especially the AM/PM cycle. The date and day typically change around midnight. If the issue persists, avoid manual adjustment between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM and consult a watchmaker, as there might be a mechanical issue.
