2. Setup

2.1 Cleat Installation

The Fizik X1 Infinito shoes are compatible with 2-bolt SPD-style cleats, commonly used for mountain biking and gravel riding. Proper cleat positioning is crucial for comfort, efficiency, and injury prevention.

  1. Prepare the Sole: Locate the two threaded inserts on the sole of the shoe. Remove any protective stickers or plugs covering these inserts.
  2. Position the Cleat: Place your 2-bolt cleat over the inserts. Most cleats have markings or a central line to aid in alignment.
  3. Initial Adjustment: Start by positioning the cleat so that the center of the cleat aligns with the ball of your foot. This is typically just behind the first metatarsal head (the joint at the base of your big toe).
  4. Secure the Cleat: Insert the two cleat bolts through the cleat and into the threaded inserts. Hand-tighten them initially.
  5. Fine-tune Position: Adjust the cleat fore/aft, side-to-side, and rotationally to find your optimal pedaling position. It is recommended to consult a bike fit specialist for precise cleat setup.
  6. Final Tightening: Once satisfied with the position, tighten the cleat bolts securely using an appropriate hex key. Refer to your cleat manufacturer's specifications for torque settings. Do not overtighten.

2.2 Boa IP1-B Dial Adjustment

The Infinito Closure System with double Boa IP1-B dials provides a precise and customizable fit across the forefoot and instep.

  • Tightening: To tighten the fit, turn the Boa dial clockwise. Each click provides a micro-adjustment, allowing for very fine-tuning.
  • Loosening: To loosen the fit, turn the Boa dial counter-clockwise. Each click provides a micro-adjustment.
  • Full Release: To fully release the tension and open the shoe, pull the Boa dial outwards until it clicks. This allows for quick removal of the shoe.

3. Operating (Usage)

3.1 Donning the Shoes

  1. Pull both Boa dials outwards to fully release the tension.
  2. Open the shoe's upper and slide your foot in, ensuring your heel is seated firmly against the back of the shoe.
  3. Press the Boa dials back into place until they click.
  4. Turn the Boa dials clockwise to gradually tighten the shoe. Start with the lower dial (forefoot) then the upper dial (instep) to achieve a snug, comfortable fit without pressure points.

3.2 Adjusting Fit During Ride

The Boa IP1-B dials allow for on-the-fly micro-adjustments. If your feet swell during a ride or if you need to adjust for different terrain, simply turn the dials clockwise to tighten or counter-clockwise to loosen the fit as needed.

3.3 Walking and Dismounting

The aggressive treads on the heel and toe of the outsole provide positive grip for walking and scrambling off the bike. Be mindful that cycling cleats can still be slippery on certain surfaces. The cleat recess is designed for mud clearance, which also aids in walking.

4. Maintenance

Regular cleaning and inspection will extend the life of your Fizik X1 Infinito cycling shoes.

  • Cleaning the Upper: Wipe the Microtex laser perforated upper with a damp cloth after each ride, especially if it's muddy or dusty. For stubborn dirt, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Allow to air dry away from direct heat.
  • Cleaning the Outsole: Brush off any mud or debris from the full UD carbon outsole and rubber studs. You can use water and a brush to clean the treads and cleat area. Ensure the cleat bolts are free of debris.
  • Boa Dials and Laces: Periodically inspect the Boa dials and steel-coated nylon laces for any signs of wear or damage. Clean any dirt or mud from around the dials and lace guides. The Boa system is designed to be durable, but keeping it clean ensures smooth operation.
  • Cleat Bolts: Regularly check the tightness of your cleat bolts. Loose cleats can lead to poor power transfer, discomfort, and potential injury.
  • Replaceable Spikes: The front of the sole allows for replaceable cyclocross-style spikes. If these wear down or become damaged, they can be replaced to maintain optimal grip in muddy conditions.
  • Insoles: Remove the Infinito footbed periodically to air them out and clean the inside of the shoe. The insoles can be hand-washed with mild soap and water.

5. Troubleshooting

  • Discomfort or Hot Spots:
    • Cause: Cleat position, shoe tightness, or incorrect insole.
    • Solution: Experiment with cleat position (fore/aft, rotational). Adjust Boa dials to relieve pressure points. Ensure the Infinito footbed is properly seated. Consider professional bike fitting.
  • Difficulty Clipping In/Out:
    • Cause: Worn cleats, cleat position, or pedal tension.
    • Solution: Inspect cleats for wear and replace if necessary. Adjust cleat position. Adjust the tension on your pedals according to their manufacturer's instructions.
  • Boa Dial Not Functioning Smoothly:
    • Cause: Dirt, debris, or damage to the dial or laces.
    • Solution: Clean the dial and lace guides thoroughly. Inspect the steel-coated nylon laces for fraying or kinks. If damaged, contact Fizik or Boa Technology for replacement parts or service.
  • Squeaking Noise:
    • Cause: Loose cleat bolts, dry cleat-pedal interface, or shoe components rubbing.
    • Solution: Tighten cleat bolts. Apply a small amount of dry lubricant to the cleat-pedal interface. Check for any rubbing between shoe parts.
