Abu Garcia Revo MGX Theta Spinning Reel 1000S User Manual

Model: REVO MGX THETA 1000S

1. Introduction

The Abu Garcia Revo MGX Theta 1000S spinning reel is engineered for precision and lightweight performance. It features a frictionless main shaft design for exceptionally smooth rotation, enhancing winding sensitivity to detect subtle changes during retrieval. Constructed with a C6 carbon rotor and Feathermetal™ magnesium alloy body, this reel offers both strength and reduced weight. The advanced AM Gearing and COG Gear Design ensure durable and smooth operation, while the Rocket Line Management System optimizes casting and line lay.

This manual provides essential information for the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Revo MGX Theta 1000S spinning reel to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Setup

2.1 Attaching the Reel to Your Rod

  1. Loosen the reel seat nut on your fishing rod.
  2. Place the reel foot into the reel seat.
  3. Tighten the reel seat nut securely until the reel is firmly attached and does not wobble.

2.2 Spooling Fishing Line

The Revo MGX Theta features the Rocket Line Management System™ for efficient line spooling and casting.

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Maintain light tension on the line as you reel it onto the spool. Ensure the line lays evenly.
  5. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the rim to prevent tangles and optimize casting distance.

2.3 Adjusting the Drag System

The 2-way DRAG system allows for two distinct drag settings: "Light" and "Tough," by changing the order of the drag washers. Refer to the included parts diagram for specific washer arrangement. The carbon matrix drag system provides smooth, consistent drag pressure across its range.

  • To increase drag, turn the drag knob clockwise.
  • To decrease drag, turn the drag knob counter-clockwise.
  • Always set your drag before fishing, typically to about 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.

2.4 Sinker Holder Attachment

The reel comes standard with a sinker holder, which can be used to secure sinkers or hooks when moving between fishing spots, preventing tangles.

3. Operating Your Reel

3.1 Casting

  1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Open the bail arm with your non-reeling hand.
  3. Hold the line against the rod with your index finger.
  4. Execute your cast. Release the line from your finger at the optimal point in the casting arc.
  5. As the lure or bait approaches the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle to engage the line roller.

The Rocket Line Management System, with its unique spool lip design and slow oscillation system, ensures smoother line release and optimal line lay, contributing to longer and more accurate casts.

3.2 Retrieving

The frictionless main shaft design and AM Gearing provide a light and smooth retrieve. The improved winding sensitivity allows you to feel subtle bites and changes in lure action.

  • Turn the handle clockwise to retrieve line.
  • Maintain a consistent retrieve speed appropriate for your fishing technique.
  • The reel's lightweight design aids in maintaining tension during a fight, preventing slack line when a fish bites and runs.

3.3 Anti-Reverse Function

The instant anti-reverse on/off switch has been removed in this model to enhance stopper reliability and prevent accidental operation. The reel provides immediate anti-reverse engagement for solid hooksets and control during a fight.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Post-Fishing Care

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Allow the reel to air dry completely before storage.

The Salt Shield™ bearings, with their water-repellent coating, are designed to resist saltwater corrosion and reduce rotation noise, but proper rinsing is still crucial for longevity.

4.2 Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knob, bail arm pivots, and line roller.
  • Apply a thin layer of reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear if performing a deeper service. For internal lubrication, it is recommended to consult a professional reel technician.

4.3 Storage

  • Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Loosen the drag completely before storing to prevent compression of the drag washers.

5. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Rough or stiff retrieveDirt, sand, or old lubricant in gears/bearings.Clean and lubricate the reel. If persistent, professional service may be required.
Line tangles or uneven line layOverfilling the spool, improper line tension during spooling, or issues with the uni-flow bail.Ensure spool is not overfilled. Respool line with proper tension. Check bail arm for obstructions or damage.
Drag slipping or inconsistentDrag washers are dry, dirty, or worn.Clean and lightly grease drag washers (use specialized drag grease). Replace worn washers if necessary.
Bail arm not closing properlyDebris, bent bail wire, or spring issue.Clear any debris. Inspect bail wire for damage. If spring issue, professional repair is recommended.

For issues not listed or if solutions do not resolve the problem, please contact an authorized Abu Garcia service center or your retailer.
