Setup

1. Attaching the Reel to a Fishing Rod

  1. Loosen the reel seat nut on your fishing rod.
  2. Place the reel foot into the reel seat.
  3. Tighten the reel seat nut securely until the reel is firmly attached and does not wobble.

2. Spooling Fishing Line

  1. Open the bail arm.
  2. Tie the fishing line to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot.
  3. Close the bail arm.
  4. Hold the line under slight tension and begin to reel slowly, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool.
  5. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch (3mm) from the rim. Overfilling can cause tangles.

4. Setting the Drag

The drag system controls the amount of resistance the line experiences when pulled from the spool.

  • To increase drag tension, turn the drag knob (located on top of the spool) clockwise.
  • To decrease drag tension, turn the drag knob counter-clockwise.
  • A good starting point for drag setting is approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength. Adjust as needed during fishing.

Operating Instructions

1. Casting

  1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
  2. Press the line against the rod handle with your index finger.
  3. Open the bail arm with your other hand.
  4. Swing the rod forward, releasing your index finger at the peak of the forward motion to allow the lure to fly.
  5. As the lure approaches the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle to prepare for retrieve.

2. Retrieving

  • Turn the handle to retrieve the line. Maintain a consistent speed appropriate for your lure and fishing technique.
  • The 5.2:1 gear ratio provides a balanced retrieve suitable for various fishing applications.

3. Fighting a Fish

  • When a fish strikes, set the hook firmly.
  • Allow the drag system to work by letting the fish take line when it pulls hard. Do not overtighten the drag.
  • Pump the rod by lifting it, then lowering it while reeling in the slack line. Repeat this process to bring the fish closer.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning After Use

  • After each use, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel.
  • Wipe the reel dry with a soft cloth.
  • Remove any dirt, sand, or debris from the reel body, spool, and line roller.

2. Lubrication

  • Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knob, line roller, and main shaft.
  • Use reel grease on gears if disassembling for deeper maintenance. Consult a professional if unsure.

3. Storage

  • Store the reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Loosen the drag knob slightly before storage to prevent compression of the drag washers.
