1. Introduction
This instruction manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Yamaha TRBX505 5-string electric bass guitar. Please read this manual thoroughly to understand the instrument's features and ensure its longevity and optimal performance.
The Yamaha TRBX505 is a 5-string electric bass guitar featuring a contoured mahogany body and a 5-piece maple/mahogany neck. It is equipped with YGD H5 Alnico V pickups and an Active/Passive EQ circuit. The design includes a straight string pull from nut to tuners for tuning stability and a high-mass die-cast bridge for efficient string vibration transfer.

2. Setup
2.1 Unboxing and Initial Inspection
Carefully remove the bass from its packaging. Inspect the instrument for any signs of damage that may have occurred during shipping. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.
2.2 Battery Installation
The TRBX505 features active electronics requiring a 9V battery. The battery compartment is located on the back of the instrument. To install or replace the battery:
- Open the battery compartment cover.
- Connect a new 9V manganese battery to the clip.
- Place the battery inside the compartment and close the cover securely.
Ensure the battery is correctly oriented to avoid damage to the electronics. Remove the battery if the instrument will not be used for an extended period.
2.3 Connecting to an Amplifier
Use a standard instrument cable to connect the output jack of the TRBX505 to the input of a bass amplifier. Ensure the amplifier's volume is set to a low level before turning it on.
2.4 Tuning the Instrument
Tune the 5 strings to standard bass tuning: B-E-A-D-G (from lowest to highest pitch). Use an electronic tuner for accuracy. The straight string pull design contributes to stable tuning.
3. Operating the Controls
The TRBX505 features a versatile control layout for shaping your tone. Refer to Figure 2 for control locations.

Figure 2: Close-up of TRBX505 control knobs and switch.
- Master Volume: Adjusts the overall output level of the instrument.
- Pickup Balancer: Blends the output between the neck and bridge pickups. Turning it clockwise emphasizes the bridge pickup, while counter-clockwise emphasizes the neck pickup.
- 3-Band Equalizer (Bass, Middle, Treble): These three knobs allow you to boost or cut specific frequency ranges when the bass is in active mode.
- Bass: Adjusts low frequencies.
- Middle: Adjusts mid-range frequencies.
- Treble: Adjusts high frequencies.
- Active/Passive Switch: Toggles between active (powered by battery, using EQ) and passive (no battery required, EQ bypassed) modes. In passive mode, the Treble knob functions as a passive tone control.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
Regularly wipe down the body, neck, and strings with a soft, dry cloth after use. For stubborn grime, use a guitar-specific cleaning solution sparingly. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
4.2 String Replacement
Strings should be replaced periodically to maintain tone and playability. Replace one string at a time to maintain neck tension. Use 5-string bass guitar strings of appropriate gauge.
4.3 Fretboard Care
Periodically clean and condition the fretboard, especially if it appears dry. Use a lemon oil or fretboard conditioner suitable for rosewood or similar woods. Avoid getting oil on the frets.
4.4 Battery Replacement
Replace the 9V battery when the sound becomes weak or distorted, or if the active electronics cease to function. Refer to Section 2.2 for battery installation instructions.
5. Troubleshooting
- No Sound:
- Check instrument cable connections.
- Ensure amplifier is on and volume is up.
- If in active mode, check the 9V battery. Try switching to passive mode.
- Verify the Master Volume knob on the bass is not set to zero.
- Unwanted Noise (Hum/Buzz):
- Ensure proper grounding of amplifier and power outlets.
- Check for faulty cables.
- Move away from sources of electromagnetic interference (e.g., computer monitors, fluorescent lights).
- Tuning Instability:
- Ensure strings are properly stretched after installation.
- Check tuning machine screws for tightness.
- Verify strings are correctly seated in the nut and bridge saddles.
