1. Important Safety Instructions

Always read and understand all safety warnings and instructions before operating this chainsaw. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, head protection, heavy-duty gloves, and safety footwear. Consider leg protection (chainsaw chaps) for added safety.
• Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate chainsaws in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Keep children and bystanders away.
• Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
• Chainsaw Specific Safety:
  • Kickback: Be aware of kickback, which can occur when the moving chain at the tip of the guide bar contacts an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Avoid cutting with the tip of the guide bar.
  • Proper Grip: Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands, with thumbs and fingers encircling the chainsaw handles.
  • Clear Work Area: Ensure there are no obstacles in your cutting path and that you have a stable footing.
  • Maintenance: Keep chains sharp and properly tensioned. Ensure the automatic oiler is functioning and the oil tank is filled.

2. Product Overview

The Greenworks GD40CS18 is a 40V cordless chainsaw designed for efficient wood cutting. It features a brushless motor for extended runtime and durability, a 40 cm (16 inch) guide bar, and an automatic chain oiling system.

3. Assembly

The chainsaw may require some assembly before first use. Follow these steps carefully.

3.1 Installing the Guide Bar and Chain

1. Ensure the battery is removed from the chainsaw.
2. Loosen the two nuts on the side cover and remove the cover.
3. Place the chain around the sprocket and then fit it into the groove of the guide bar.
4. Position the guide bar onto the chainsaw studs, ensuring the chain is correctly seated around the drive sprocket.
5. Replace the side cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.
6. Adjust the chain tension using the tool-less tensioning knob. Turn the knob clockwise to increase tension and counter-clockwise to decrease. The chain should be snug but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
7. Once tension is set, fully tighten the two nuts on the side cover.

3.2 Filling Chain Oil

The chainsaw features an automatic lubrication system. It is crucial to keep the oil tank filled with appropriate chain and bar oil.

1. Ensure the chainsaw is on a level surface and the battery is removed.
2. Unscrew the oil tank cap.
3. Carefully pour chain and bar oil into the tank until it reaches the maximum fill line.
4. Replace the oil tank cap securely.
5. Regularly check the transparent oil level indicator during operation and refill as needed.

3.3 Inserting the Battery

This chainsaw operates with Greenworks 40V Lithium-Ion batteries (sold separately).

1. Ensure the battery is fully charged.
2. Align the battery with the battery compartment on the chainsaw.
3. Slide the battery into the compartment until it clicks securely into place.
4. To remove, press the battery release button and slide the battery out.

4. Operation

Before starting, ensure all safety checks are complete and you are wearing appropriate PPE.

4.1 Starting the Chainsaw

1. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands.
2. Press and hold the safety lock-off button (usually located on the side of the rear handle).
3. While holding the safety button, squeeze the trigger switch to start the motor.
4. Release the safety lock-off button once the motor starts. The chainsaw will continue to run as long as the trigger is pressed.
5. To stop the chainsaw, release the trigger switch.

4.2 Cutting Techniques

• Felling Small Trees: Plan your escape path. Make a notch cut (undercut) on the side of the tree in the direction of the fall, then make a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch.
• Limbing: Remove limbs from a fallen tree. Work from the butt end towards the top, keeping the tree between you and the chainsaw. Be aware of spring-loaded branches.
• Bucking: Cutting a fallen log into shorter lengths. Support the log to prevent pinching. If cutting from above, cut about one-third of the way through, then roll the log and finish the cut. If cutting from below, cut one-third from below, then finish from above.
• Avoid Kickback: Never cut with the tip of the guide bar. Maintain a firm grip and stable stance.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your chainsaw.

5.1 Chain Lubrication

The automatic oiler system requires regular monitoring. Always ensure the oil tank is filled with quality chain and bar oil before and during operation.

• Check the oil level frequently using the transparent indicator.
• Refill the oil tank when the level is low.
• Ensure the oil port on the guide bar is clear of debris.

5.2 Chain Sharpening and Replacement

• A dull chain will not cut efficiently and can increase the risk of kickback. Sharpen the chain regularly with a suitable round file (not included).
• If the chain is damaged or excessively worn, replace it with a new chain of the correct type and size (40 cm / 16 inch).

5.3 Cleaning and Storage

• Always remove the battery before cleaning.
• Clean the chainsaw body, guide bar, and chain after each use. Remove sawdust, chips, and debris.
• Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children. Ensure the guide bar cover is in place.
