1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Magnusson SF35 Hand Plane. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use, setup, operation, and maintenance of your tool. Please read these instructions carefully before use and retain them for future reference.

2. Product Overview

2.1 Key Features

  • Durable Construction: Robust cast iron body designed to withstand impacts and ensure long-term durability.
  • Adjustable Depth: Features an adjustable planing depth mechanism for precise material removal.
  • Ergonomic Design: Equipped with a comfortable front knob and rear handle for improved grip and control.
  • Standard Blade Size: Utilizes a 50mm wide blade, suitable for various woodworking tasks.

2.2 Components

Familiarize yourself with the main components of your hand plane:

  1. Body: The main cast iron frame of the plane.
  2. Blade (Iron): The cutting edge of the plane.
  3. Cap Iron (Chip Breaker): Sits on top of the blade to curl and break wood shavings.
  4. Lever Cap: Holds the blade and cap iron assembly firmly in place.
  5. Frog: The adjustable bed that supports the blade.
  6. Depth Adjustment Knob: Controls how much of the blade protrudes from the sole.
  7. Lateral Adjustment Lever: Adjusts the blade side-to-side to ensure even cutting.
  8. Front Knob: Provides a grip point for the non-dominant hand.
  9. Rear Handle (Tote): Provides a grip point for the dominant hand.
  10. Sole: The flat bottom surface of the plane that slides over the workpiece.

3. Setup

3.1 Blade Installation and Adjustment

  1. Ensure the blade is sharp and free of nicks.
  2. Place the cap iron onto the blade, ensuring the bevel of the cap iron faces away from the cutting edge of the blade. The edge of the cap iron should be set back approximately 1mm to 2mm from the cutting edge for general work.
  3. Position the blade and cap iron assembly onto the frog.
  4. Secure the assembly with the lever cap, ensuring it is tight enough to prevent movement but not overtightened.
  5. Turn the depth adjustment knob to advance or retract the blade until a fine shaving of the blade is visible just below the sole.
  6. Use the lateral adjustment lever to ensure the blade is parallel to the sole, resulting in an even projection across the width of the blade.

3.2 Adjusting Planing Depth

The depth of cut is controlled by the depth adjustment knob. Turn the knob clockwise to decrease the depth of cut (retract the blade) and counter-clockwise to increase the depth of cut (advance the blade). For fine work, only a very thin shaving of the blade should protrude.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Holding the Plane

  • Grip the rear handle (tote) with your dominant hand.
  • Place your non-dominant hand on the front knob. This grip provides control and downward pressure.

4.2 Planing Technique

  1. Secure your workpiece firmly to a workbench.
  2. Position the plane at the leading edge of the workpiece. Apply downward pressure on the front knob as you begin the stroke.
  3. Push the plane forward with a smooth, consistent motion. As you reach the end of the stroke, shift pressure to the rear handle to maintain an even cut.
  4. Lift the plane off the workpiece at the end of the stroke and return it to the starting position.
  5. Overlap each stroke slightly to ensure a continuous, even surface.
  6. Always plane with the grain of the wood to prevent tear-out.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Blade Sharpening

A sharp blade is crucial for effective planing. Sharpen the blade regularly using appropriate sharpening stones or systems. Maintain the original bevel angle for optimal performance.

5.2 Cleaning and Rust Prevention

  • After each use, clean wood dust and debris from the plane body and blade.
  • Apply a thin coat of rust preventative oil or wax to all bare metal surfaces, especially the sole and blade, to prevent corrosion.
  • Store the plane in a dry environment.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Uneven Cuts: Check if the blade is parallel to the sole using the lateral adjustment lever. Ensure consistent pressure during the stroke.
  • Blade Chatter: This can indicate a dull blade, insufficient tightening of the lever cap, or an improperly set frog. Sharpen the blade, tighten the lever cap, and ensure the frog is securely positioned.
  • Tear-out: Usually caused by planing against the grain. Always plane with the grain of the wood. A tighter mouth (adjusting the frog forward) can also help reduce tear-out on difficult grain.
  • Plane Sticking/Dragging: Ensure the sole is clean and waxed. Check for excessive blade projection.
