Rode NTG5KIT

Rode NTG5 Shotgun Condenser Microphone Kit

Model: NTG5KIT

Introduction

The Rode NTG5 is a short, ultra-lightweight shotgun microphone designed for demanding recording applications. Its revolutionary acoustic design, featuring circular ports instead of traditional linear slots, provides unmatched transparency and a natural, uncoloured sound. With a tightly controlled frequency response, smooth off-axis response, and very low self-noise (just 10dBA), the NTG5 delivers spectacular audio quality suitable for location recording and filmmaking. Weighing only 76g and measuring just over 20cm, it is ideal for extended use on long shoots. The microphone incorporates RF-bias circuitry for reliable performance in adverse environments, offering excellent resistance to high humidity, severe cold, damp, and dust.

Setup

1. Attaching the Microphone to the PG2-R Pistol Grip Shock Mount

  1. Carefully insert the NTG5 microphone into the red Rycote Lyre mounts on the PG2-R pistol grip. Ensure the microphone is securely seated within the mounts.
  2. Connect the PG2-R Pro Cable to the XLR 3-Pin Male connector at the base of the NTG5 microphone.
  3. If using, slide either the Foam Windshield or the WS10 Furry Windshield over the microphone capsule. The Foam Windshield is suitable for light wind conditions, while the WS10 is designed for higher wind environments.

2. Connecting to a Recording Device

The NTG5 requires 48V phantom power for operation. Connect the XLR cable from the PG2-R pistol grip to an audio interface, field recorder, or camera input that provides phantom power.

Operating Instructions

1. Polar Pattern and Directionality

The NTG5 features a highly directional supercardioid polar pattern. This means it is most sensitive to sounds coming directly from the front and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. This characteristic is ideal for isolating desired audio sources and minimizing background noise.

2. Phantom Power

The NTG5 requires 48V phantom power. Ensure your recording device or mixer provides this power for the microphone to function correctly. The microphone's low current draw helps conserve battery power on portable recording devices.

3. Wind Protection

Use the appropriate windshield for your recording environment:
