2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working on vehicle suspension. Improper installation or adjustment can lead to serious injury or vehicle damage. It is highly recommended that installation and major adjustments be performed by a qualified professional.

  • Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands or a lift before beginning any work.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque specifications and procedures.
  • After installation, perform a wheel alignment to ensure proper vehicle handling and tire wear.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Pre-Installation Check

Before beginning installation, verify that all components are present and undamaged. Compare the received parts with the packing list. Ensure the correct application for your Acura RSX (2002-2006).

3.2 General Installation Steps

While specific steps may vary, the general procedure for installing coilovers involves:

  1. Safely lift and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Disconnect and remove the OEM suspension components (struts, springs, etc.).
  4. Install the new BC Racing coilovers, ensuring proper orientation and secure fastening of all bolts and nuts.
  5. Reconnect any brake lines, ABS sensors, or sway bar links that were disconnected.
  6. Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  7. Perform initial ride height and damping adjustments.
  8. Drive the vehicle a short distance to allow the suspension to settle, then re-check all fasteners and make final adjustments.
  9. An alignment is required after installation.

4. Operating and Adjustment

4.1 Ride Height Adjustment

The BR Series coilovers feature independent ride height adjustment, meaning the ride height can be changed without affecting spring preload or shock travel. This is achieved by adjusting the lower mount of the coilover body.

  • To adjust ride height, loosen the locking collar on the lower mount.
  • Rotate the main body of the coilover relative to the lower mount to raise or lower the vehicle.
  • Once the desired height is achieved, securely tighten the locking collar.
  • Ensure both sides of the vehicle are adjusted equally to maintain balance.

4.2 Damping Force Adjustment

The coilovers offer 30 levels of damping force adjustment, controlling both compression and rebound simultaneously. This allows fine-tuning of the ride comfort and handling characteristics.

  • The damping adjustment knob is located at the top of the shock shaft (for front coilovers) or at the bottom (for rear coilovers, depending on design).
  • Turn the knob clockwise for a stiffer ride (more damping) and counter-clockwise for a softer ride (less damping).
  • Start with a neutral setting (e.g., 15 clicks from full soft) and adjust incrementally to find your preferred setting.
  • Always adjust damping on both sides of the vehicle equally.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps prolong the life and performance of your coilovers.

  • Regular Cleaning: Keep the coilover bodies, threads, and collars clean from dirt, salt, and debris. Use mild soap and water, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Inspect for Damage: Periodically inspect for any signs of leaks, bent components, or damaged dust boots.
  • Check Torque: After initial settling, and periodically thereafter, re-check the torque of all mounting bolts and locking collars.
  • Lubrication: Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound to the threads of the coilover body and collars during installation and if adjustments become difficult.

6. Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseSolution
Excessive Noise (clunking/squeaking)Loose mounting bolts, worn bushings, spring binding, or damaged components.Check all mounting bolts for proper torque. Inspect bushings for wear. Ensure springs are seated correctly. If noise persists, professional inspection is recommended.
Uneven Ride HeightIncorrect ride height adjustment, uneven settling, or damaged spring.Re-measure and adjust ride height on both sides. Drive the vehicle to allow settling, then re-measure. Inspect springs for damage.
Poor Handling/BouncingIncorrect damping settings, worn shock, or alignment issues.Adjust damping settings (try stiffer). Inspect shocks for leaks. Perform a wheel alignment.

If you encounter issues not listed here or if solutions do not resolve the problem, contact BC Racing customer support or a certified automotive technician.
