2. Setup

2.1 Driver Installation

Before connecting the cable, ensure that the necessary USB drivers are installed on your computer. Most modern operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux) may automatically install generic USB serial drivers. However, for optimal performance and compatibility, it is recommended to use drivers provided by the cable's chipset manufacturer (e.g., FTDI, Prolific) or the radio manufacturer if specific drivers are required for their programming software.

  1. Obtain Drivers: Check the website of the cable's chipset manufacturer or the Tait radio manufacturer for the latest USB serial drivers. Download the appropriate driver package for your operating system.
  2. Install Drivers: Follow the instructions provided with the driver package to install them. This usually involves running an executable file or following on-screen prompts.
  3. Verify Installation: After installation, connect the USB end of the cable to your PC. Open your computer's Device Manager (Windows) or System Information (macOS) and look for a new COM port or USB Serial Port entry under "Ports (COM & LPT)" or "USB Devices" to confirm successful driver installation. Note the assigned COM port number, as this will be needed for the programming software.

2.2 Connecting the Cable

  1. Connect to PC: Insert the USB-A connector of the programming cable into an available USB port on your computer.
  2. Connect to Radio/Repeater: Locate the programming port on your Tait mobile radio or repeater. This is typically an 8-pin RJ-45 (Ethernet-style) port, often found on the front or rear panel. Carefully insert the RJ-45 connector of the programming cable into this port until it clicks into place.
  3. Power On: Ensure your Tait radio or repeater is powered on.

3. Operation

3.1 Using Programming Software

This cable acts as an interface between your computer and the radio. To program your Tait device, you will need the specific programming software provided by Tait Communications (e.g., Tait CPS - Conventional Programming Software, or Tait DMR CPS for digital radios). This software is typically obtained directly from Tait or authorized dealers.

  1. Launch Software: Open the Tait programming software on your computer.
  2. Select COM Port: Within the software's settings or communication options, select the COM port number that was assigned to your USB programming cable (as identified in Section 2.1).
  3. Read/Write Data: Follow the software's instructions to read the current configuration from your radio, make desired changes, and then write the new configuration back to the radio. Always back up your radio's current configuration before making significant changes.
  4. Disconnect: Once programming is complete, safely close the software and disconnect the cable from both the radio and the PC.

Note: Refer to the specific user manual for your Tait programming software for detailed instructions on its features and functions.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Care and Handling

  • Avoid bending or kinking the cable excessively, especially near the connectors, as this can damage internal wires.
  • Do not expose the cable to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or moisture.
  • Keep connectors clean and free of dust or debris. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe them if necessary.
  • Always grasp the connector housing, not the cable itself, when plugging or unplugging.

4.2 Storage

When not in use, coil the cable loosely and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heavy objects that could crush it.
