Introduction
Welcome to your new Meade DS. 114 Reflecting Telescope. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and effective use of your instrument. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to set up or operate your telescope.
Safety Information
- Never look directly at the Sun through your telescope or its finderscope without a professionally manufactured solar filter. Permanent and irreversible eye damage, including blindness, can result.
- Do not use the telescope in areas where it may be exposed to moisture or extreme temperatures.
- Handle optical components with care to avoid scratches or damage.
- Keep the telescope and its accessories out of reach of small children.
Package Contents
Before beginning assembly, carefully unpack all components and verify that you have received all items listed below:
- Meade DS. 114 Optical Tube Assembly (OTA)
- Aluminum Tripod with Accessory Tray
- Eyepieces (e.g., 25mm, 9mm)
- Finderscope with Bracket
- Accessory Bag
- User Manual (this document)
Setup and Assembly
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove all components from their packaging. Retain the packaging for future storage or transport.
2. Tripod Assembly
- Extend the three legs of the aluminum tripod to their full length.
- Spread the legs apart until the accessory tray supports are taut.
- Attach the accessory tray to the supports, ensuring it is securely fastened. This tray provides stability and a convenient place for eyepieces.
3. Attaching the Optical Tube
- Locate the mounting plate on the optical tube and align it with the dovetail saddle on the tripod head.
- Slide the optical tube onto the saddle and tighten the locking knob to secure it firmly.

4. Installing the Finderscope
- Slide the finderscope into its bracket on the optical tube.
- Tighten the small thumbscrews on the bracket to hold the finderscope in place.
5. Inserting Eyepieces
- Loosen the thumbscrew on the focuser.
- Insert the desired eyepiece (e.g., 25mm for lower magnification, 9mm for higher magnification) into the focuser barrel.
- Tighten the thumbscrew to secure the eyepiece.
Operating Your Telescope
1. Aligning the Finderscope
Before observing, align the finderscope with the main telescope. Point the main telescope at a distant, stationary object (e.g., a streetlight during the day). Look through the finderscope and adjust its alignment screws until the object is centered in both the finderscope and the main telescope's eyepiece.
2. Focusing
Once an object is in view, turn the focuser knob slowly until the image appears sharp and clear. Different eyepieces and observers may require slight adjustments.
3. Observing
Use the telescope's slow-motion controls to smoothly track celestial objects as they move across the sky due to Earth's rotation. Start with a low magnification eyepiece (e.g., 25mm) to locate objects, then switch to higher magnification if desired.
4. Changing Magnification
To change magnification, loosen the focuser thumbscrew, carefully remove the current eyepiece, and insert a different one. Re-tighten the thumbscrew and re-focus as needed.
Maintenance and Care
Cleaning Optics
Dust on the primary mirror or eyepieces can degrade image quality. Use a soft camel hair brush or compressed air to gently remove loose dust. For stubborn smudges, use a specialized optical cleaning solution and a clean microfiber cloth, applying minimal pressure.
Storage
When not in use, store your telescope in a dry, dust-free environment. Replace all lens caps and covers to protect the optics. Avoid storing the telescope in areas with high humidity or extreme temperature fluctuations.
Troubleshooting
- Problem: Image is blurry or out of focus.
Solution: Adjust the focuser knob slowly in both directions until the image becomes sharp. Ensure the eyepiece is fully seated and secured. - Problem: Cannot find objects in the main telescope.
Solution: Verify that the finderscope is properly aligned with the main telescope. Use the finderscope to center the object, then look through the main eyepiece. Start with a low magnification eyepiece. - Problem: Image appears dim or faint.
Solution: Ensure you are observing from a dark location away from light pollution. Allow your eyes to adapt to the darkness. For very faint objects, use a lower magnification eyepiece. - Problem: Telescope shakes excessively.
Solution: Ensure the tripod legs are fully extended and locked, and the accessory tray is securely attached. Avoid touching the telescope during observation.
