1. Introduction and Overview

The Zoom H4n Pro is a versatile 4-track portable recorder designed for high-fidelity audio capture across various applications, including music recording, film audio, and podcasting. 2. What's in the Box

Upon unboxing your Zoom H4n Pro, please ensure all the following items are present:

3. Setup

3.1. Battery Installation

The Zoom H4n Pro operates on 2 AA batteries. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the device.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert 2 AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2. SD Card Insertion

The device records directly to SD/SDHC cards. A memory card is essential for operation.

  1. Locate the SD card slot on the side of the recorder, typically protected by a rubber flap.
  2. Open the flap.
  3. Insert an SD or SDHC card (up to 32 GB) into the slot with the metal contacts facing down and the notched corner aligned correctly. Push until it clicks into place.
  4. Close the rubber flap to protect the slot.

3.3. Powering On/Off

To power on the Zoom H4n Pro:

  1. Locate the "HOLD/POWER" switch on the right side of the device.
  2. Slide and hold the switch downwards towards the power icon (⏻).
  3. The screen will illuminate, and the device will begin loading. This process may take a few moments.

To power off the Zoom H4n Pro:

  1. Slide and hold the "HOLD/POWER" switch downwards until the screen displays "Goodbye See You!" and then turns off.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Recording Basics

The H4n Pro supports 4-track simultaneous recording at resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Before recording, ensure your input levels are set appropriately to avoid clipping.

4.2. Built-in X/Y Microphones

The device features two high-quality X/Y condenser microphones at the top. These microphones are adjustable between 90° and 120° to capture a wider or narrower stereo image, depending on your recording environment and desired sound.

4.3. External Inputs and Preamps

For external microphones or line-level sources, the H4n Pro includes two XLR/TRS combo input jacks with locking connectors. These inputs support +24V or +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. Additionally, a stereo 1/8" Mic In mini phone jack is available for smaller external microphones requiring 2.5V plug-in power.

4.4. USB Audio Interface Functionality

The H4n Pro can function as a 4-in/2-out USB audio interface, allowing you to record directly to your computer or use it as a high-quality microphone for streaming and conferencing. Connect the device to your computer using a compatible USB cable.
