Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the FlowServe Scienco SEM-100 Fixed Mount Electronic Flow Meter. The SEM-100 is designed for accurate measurement of various non-flammable liquids in applications such as agriculture, chemical transfer, light oils, inks, and automotive fluids. It features a positive displacement nutating disk design for precise measurement across a range of viscosities.
Safety Information
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals or installing the flow meter.
- Ensure the system pressure does not exceed 4 bar (60 psi).
- Do not exceed the maximum operating temperature of 55°C (130°F).
- This unit is intended for use only with liquids compatible with stainless steel, Ryton, and polypropylene, and Viton.
- The fluid flashpoint must be greater than 100°F.
- Flush the unit with water after use, especially if the chemical will leave a residue upon drying.
- Disconnect power before performing any maintenance.
Product Overview
The Scienco SEM-100 is an electronic flow meter designed for fixed mounting or flow-through configurations. It features a large LCD display and simple, one-touch operation.

Figure 1: Front view of the Scienco SEM-100 Electronic Flow Meter. The display shows readings, and buttons for CAL-1, TOTAL 2 CAL-2, RESET CAL-3, and ON are visible. The label indicates "Scienco Products Electronic Flow Meter • Non-Commercial" and "60 PSI MAX PRESSURE • VITON SEALS".

Figure 2: Rear view of the Scienco SEM-100 Electronic Flow Meter. A caution label is visible, stating "POSSIBLE CHEMICAL EXPOSURE!! MAXIMUM OPERATING TEMPERATURE IS 150°F FLUID FLASHPOINT MUST BE GREATER THAN 100°F" and "This unit for use only with liquids compatible with stainless steel, Ryton and polypropylene and Viton."

Setup and Installation
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the flow meter from its packaging. Inspect for any signs of damage.
- Mounting: The SEM-100 can be installed in a fixed position or as a flow-through unit. Ensure the meter is installed in a section of pipe where the flow is stable and free from turbulence.
- Connections: Connect the 1" MPT (Male Pipe Thread) connections to your piping system. Use appropriate thread sealant to prevent leaks. Ensure connections are tight but do not overtighten.
- Orientation: Install the meter in the correct flow direction as indicated by an arrow on the meter body (if present). While the nutating disk design is generally less sensitive to orientation, optimal performance is achieved with correct flow direction.
- Power On: Press the ON button to power on the device.
Operation
Basic Operation:
- Power On/Off: Press the ON button to turn the meter on. The meter will automatically power off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.
- Reading the Display: The large LCD display shows the current flow rate and totalized volume.
- Resetting the Total: To reset the current batch total, press and hold the RESET CAL-3 button.
Calibration:
The SEM-100 offers three calibration modes. Refer to the instructions on the meter's label for basic calibration steps. For detailed calibration procedures for CAL-2 and CAL-3 methods, consult the full product manual (not provided here, but referenced on the product label).
- Initial Calibration (CAL-1):
- Press the ON button.
- Hold the RESET CAL-3 button to reset the total to zero.
- Press the CAL-1 button.
- Dispense five units of liquid.
- Press CAL-1 again to finish calibration.
- Advanced Calibration (CAL-2/CAL-3): For more precise calibration or specific fluid types, use the CAL-2 or CAL-3 methods. These methods typically involve dispensing a known volume and adjusting the meter's calibration factor. Refer to the comprehensive manual for detailed steps.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: After use, especially with corrosive or residue-leaving chemicals, flush the meter thoroughly with clean water. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Battery Replacement: The meter is powered by one 3-volt lithium battery. When the display indicates low battery, replace the battery.
- Ensure the meter is off.
- Locate the battery compartment (typically on the back or side of the display unit).
- Open the compartment and replace the old battery with a new 3-volt lithium battery, ensuring correct polarity.
- Securely close the battery compartment.
- Storage: Store the meter in a clean, dry environment within its specified temperature range when not in use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Meter does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed battery. | Replace the 3-volt lithium battery, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings. |
|
|
| No flow reading, but liquid is flowing. |
|
|
| Leaks at connections. | Loose connections or improper thread sealant. | Tighten connections and reapply thread sealant if necessary. |
