Setup and Preparation
Cleaning and Sterilization:
Before first use, and after each subsequent use, all parts that come into contact with breast milk (breast shields, connectors, valves, membranes, and bottles) must be cleaned and sterilized.
- Disassemble: Separate all components that come into contact with milk.
- Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with cold, clear water to remove any milk residue.
- Wash: Wash components in warm, soapy water using a mild dish soap. Use a clean brush dedicated for breast pump parts.
- Rinse Again: Rinse thoroughly with clear water.
- Sterilize: Boil parts in water for 5 minutes or use a Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bag.
- Dry: Air dry on a clean paper towel or drying rack. Do not use a cloth towel as it may transfer germs.
Note: The pump motor unit, tubing, and power adapter should not be washed or sterilized as they do not come into contact with breast milk.
Assembly for Pumping:
- Ensure all cleaned parts are completely dry.
- Attach the membrane to the valve.
- Attach the valve to the breast shield connector.
- Screw the collection bottle onto the breast shield connector.
- Attach the tubing to the breast shield connector and the pump unit.
- Connect the power adapter to the pump unit and a power outlet, or insert 8 AA batteries into the battery pack and connect it to the pump unit.
Operating Instructions
Understanding 2-Phase Expression Technology:
Medela's 2-Phase Expression Technology is designed to mimic a baby's natural nursing pattern, which consists of two phases:
- Stimulation Phase: A fast, light sucking rhythm to initiate milk flow.
- Expression Phase: A slower, deeper sucking rhythm to gently and efficiently express milk.

Figure 6: Close-up of the Medela Pump in Style Advanced pump unit, highlighting the single knob for adjustable speed and vacuum, and the one-touch letdown button for switching between stimulation and expression phases.
Pumping Procedure:
- Positioning: Sit comfortably and place the breast shields over your breasts, ensuring your nipple is centered in the tunnel.
- Start Pumping: Turn the pump ON using the main power knob. The pump will automatically start in the Stimulation Phase.
- Adjust Vacuum (Stimulation): Adjust the vacuum level using the knob until you feel a comfortable suction. Do not set the vacuum so high that it causes discomfort.
- Initiate Let-Down: Once milk begins to flow, or after about 2 minutes, press the "Let-Down" button (often indicated by a droplet icon) to switch to the Expression Phase.
- Adjust Vacuum (Expression): In the Expression Phase, adjust the vacuum to your Maximum Comfort Vacuum (MCV) level. This is the highest vacuum level you can tolerate without pain.
- Pumping Duration: Continue pumping until milk flow slows significantly or stops, typically 10-15 minutes per breast for double pumping.
- Turn Off: Turn the pump OFF using the main power knob.
- Disassemble: Carefully remove the breast shields and disassemble the parts for cleaning.
For optimal milk production, aim for 8-12 pumping sessions per 24 hours, especially in the early weeks.
