2. Important Safety Information
Please read and understand all instructions before installing, operating, or maintaining this product. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or death.
- WARNING: Do not stand or climb on the filter.
- CAUTION: Always shut off the pump before changing the position of the VariFlo valve. Failure to do so can damage the valve and/or the filter.
- Ensure all electrical connections are made by a qualified electrician and comply with local codes.
- Keep children away from the filter system during operation.
- Do not operate the filter if any part is damaged or missing.
- Protect the filter from freezing temperatures during winter months.
3. Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your Hayward ProSeries Sand Filter. While the process can be straightforward, professional installation is recommended to ensure correct plumbing and setup.
3.1. Site Selection:
- Choose a level, firm surface, preferably concrete, close to your pool.
- Ensure adequate drainage for backwash water.
- Allow sufficient space around the filter for servicing and maintenance.
3.2. Loading Filter Media (Sand):
- Remove the VariFlo valve and internal pipe assembly from the filter tank.
- Cover the internal pipe opening with a plastic cap or tape to prevent sand from entering.
- Carefully pour the recommended amount of filter sand (approximately 100 lbs for this model) into the tank. Ensure the sand is evenly distributed.
- Remove the cap/tape from the internal pipe.
3.3. Connecting Plumbing:
- Attach the VariFlo valve to the top of the filter tank, ensuring a secure and watertight seal.
- Connect the pump to the "PUMP" port on the valve.
- Connect the return line to the pool to the "RETURN TO POOL" port.
- Connect a backwash hose (not included) to the "WASTE" port for draining backwash water.
- Ensure all connections are tight and leak-free. Teflon tape may be required for threaded connections.
Note: This unit does not come with all necessary pipe connectors or a backwash hose. These items must be purchased separately.
4. Operating the VariFlo Valve
The 7-position VariFlo valve allows for various operational modes. IMPORTANT: Always shut off the pump before changing the position of the valve handle.
| Position | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| FILTER | Normal Filtration | For normal filtering of pool water. Water flows through the sand bed, trapping debris. |
| BACKWASH | Cleaning Filter | For cleaning the filter sand bed. Water flow is reversed, flushing trapped debris out the waste port. Perform when pressure gauge rises 6-8 PSI above starting pressure. |
| RINSE | Flushing Lines | Used after backwashing to flush out any remaining dirt from the valve and pipes, and to re-seat the sand bed. Run for 30-60 seconds. |
| WASTE | Draining/Vacuuming to Waste | Bypasses the filter, sending water directly out the waste port. Useful for vacuuming heavy debris or lowering pool water level. |
| RECIRCULATE | Circulating Water | Circulates water through the system without going through the filter. Useful for chemical distribution. |
| WINTER | Winterizing | Used for winterizing the filter. Opens all ports to allow water to drain completely, preventing freeze damage. |
| CLOSED | System Shut-off | Closes all ports to the filter. Use when cleaning the pump strainer basket or performing other service. |
To change the valve position, press down on the handle and rotate it to the desired setting. Release the handle to lock it in place.
5. Maintenance
5.1. Backwashing and Rinsing:
Backwashing is the primary method for cleaning your sand filter. It should be performed when the pressure gauge reading increases by 6-8 PSI (0.4-0.5 BAR) above its clean operating pressure, or when the pool water appears cloudy.
- Turn off the pool pump.
- Set the VariFlo valve to the BACKWASH position.
- Turn on the pump and backwash for 2-3 minutes, or until the water flowing out of the waste line is clear (visible through the sight glass).
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the VariFlo valve to the RINSE position.
- Turn on the pump and rinse for 30-60 seconds to re-seat the sand bed.
- Turn off the pump.
- Set the VariFlo valve back to the FILTER position.
- Turn on the pump to resume normal filtration.
5.2. Winterizing:
To prevent damage from freezing, the filter system must be properly winterized.
- Lower the pool water level below the skimmer and return lines.
- Turn off the pump and disconnect it from power.
- Set the VariFlo valve to the WINTER position.
- Remove the drain cap at the bottom of the filter tank to allow all water to drain.
- Store the drain cap in the pump strainer basket for safekeeping.
- Disconnect all hoses and pipes from the filter and pump. Ensure all water is drained from the system.
- Store the pump and filter in a dry, protected area if possible. If left outdoors, cover them with a tarp to protect from elements.
5.3. Sand Replacement:
Filter sand typically lasts for approximately 5 years before needing replacement. Replace the sand if filtration efficiency decreases significantly despite regular backwashing.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudy Pool Water | Dirty filter sand, improper chemical balance, insufficient filtration time. | Perform backwash and rinse cycle. Test and adjust pool chemistry. Increase daily filtration time. |
| Low Water Flow | Clogged pump strainer basket, dirty filter, closed valve, air leak in suction line. | Clean pump strainer basket. Backwash and rinse filter. Ensure VariFlo valve is in FILTER position. Check for air leaks in plumbing. |
| Water Leaking from Valve/Connections | Loose connections, worn O-rings/gaskets, cracked housing. | Tighten all connections. Inspect and replace worn O-rings or gaskets. If housing is cracked, contact customer support. |
| Filter Not Backwashing Effectively | Insufficient water flow, clogged laterals, old sand. | Ensure pump is operating correctly. Check for blockages in plumbing. Consider replacing filter sand. |
For issues not listed or if problems persist, contact Hayward customer support.
