2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Initial Inspection

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all accessories listed in the package contents are present and undamaged. Keep the packaging for future storage or transport.

2.2 Powering the Machine

The BTY N-5 sewing machine offers dual power options: AC adapter or 4 AA batteries (not included).

• Using AC Adapter: Insert the power adapter plug into the DC6V external socket on the side of the machine. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.
• Using Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit. Insert 4 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment cover.

2.3 Connecting the Foot Pedal

If using the foot pedal for control, insert the foot pedal plug into the dedicated pedal jack on the side of the machine. The foot pedal allows for hands-free speed control during sewing.

2.4 Threading the Machine

Proper threading is crucial for correct stitch formation. Follow the numbered diagram on the machine or refer to the detailed manual for step-by-step instructions.

1. Place the upper thread spool on the winding rod.
2. Guide the thread through the upper thread elastic adjustment knob.
3. Thread through the take-up lever.
4. Guide the thread down to the needle.
5. Use the needle threader (included accessory) to thread the needle from left to right.
6. For the bottom bobbin, slide out the bobbin cover plate.
7. Insert the bobbin, ensuring the thread unwinds counter-clockwise.
8. Pull the bobbin thread up through the needle plate using the upper thread.
9. Replace the bobbin cover plate.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Stitch Selection

The machine features 12 built-in stitches. To select a stitch, turn the stitch selection button (dial) on the front of the machine to the desired stitch number. Refer to the stitch guide printed on the machine for visual reference.

3.2 Speed Control

The machine offers two speed settings: Low (L) and High (H). Use the switch on the side of the machine to select your preferred speed. For beginners, it is recommended to start with the Low speed setting.

3.3 Reverse Stitching

To reinforce stitches at the beginning or end of a seam, press and hold the reverse button located on the front of the machine while sewing. Release the button to resume forward stitching.

3.4 Using the Extension Table

The machine includes an extension table (8" x 9.75") for larger projects. Attach it to the free arm area to provide a wider, more stable work surface.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the machine to ensure smooth operation. Use a soft brush (often included with accessories) to remove lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth.

4.2 Needle Replacement

If the needle becomes bent or dull, replace it immediately to prevent damage to the machine or fabric. Loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the screw securely.

4.3 Bobbin Winding

To wind a new bobbin, place an empty bobbin on the bobbin winder spindle. Guide the thread from the spool through the tension disc and around the bobbin. Engage the bobbin winder and press the foot pedal or switch to wind the thread. Disengage when full.

5. Troubleshooting

• Machine Not Sewing:
  • Ensure the machine is properly plugged in or batteries are correctly installed.
  • Check if the power switch is ON.
  • Verify that the foot pedal is connected (if using).

  • Ensure the hand wheel is disengaged from bobbin winding mode.
• Skipped Stitches:
  • Check if the needle is bent or dull; replace if necessary.
  • Ensure the needle is inserted correctly and fully.
  • Verify that the thread tension is appropriate for your fabric.
  • Use the correct needle type and size for your fabric.
• Thread Breaking:
  • Check for correct threading path; ensure no tangles.
  • Adjust upper thread tension; it might be too tight.
  • Ensure the bobbin is wound evenly and not too full.
  • Replace the needle if it's dull or bent.
• Fabric Not Moving:
  • Ensure the presser foot is lowered.
  • Check if the feed dogs are engaged (if applicable).
