CamelBak H.A.W.G. LR 20 Hydration Backpack User Manual

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the CamelBak H.A.W.G. LR 20 Hydration Backpack. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and care of your new hydration system. Designed for extended adventures, the H.A.W.G. LR 20 offers maximum storage, superior hydration, and a lower center of gravity for enhanced stability.

Key features include the CRUX 3-liter lumbar reservoir with integrated compression, LR/Low Rider technology that shifts weight from your shoulders to your hips, and a Flow AC back panel combined with padded, perforated straps for optimal comfort and ventilation. It also features a magnetic tube trap for easy hydration access and an integrated rain cover for weather protection.

2. Setup

2.1 Filling the Reservoir

  1. Open the reservoir cap by twisting it counter-clockwise.
  2. Fill the CRUX reservoir with water or your preferred hydration liquid. Do not fill with carbonated beverages, milk, or alcohol.
  3. Ensure the reservoir is not overfilled.
  4. Close the cap by twisting it clockwise until securely tightened to prevent leaks.

2.2 Inserting the Reservoir into the Backpack

  1. Locate the dedicated hydration compartment at the lower back of the backpack.
  2. Slide the filled reservoir into this compartment, ensuring the hose exits through the designated port.
  3. Secure the reservoir using any internal clips or straps provided to prevent shifting during activity.

2.3 Adjusting the Backpack

  1. Put on the backpack.
  2. Adjust the shoulder straps for a snug but comfortable fit.
  3. Fasten and adjust the sternum strap across your chest. The magnetic tube trap is integrated into this strap for easy hose management.
  4. Fasten and adjust the waist belt around your hips. This is crucial for the LR (Low Rider) technology to effectively transfer weight.
  5. Ensure the backpack sits comfortably and securely on your back, with the weight distributed evenly.

2.4 Attaching a Helmet

The H.A.W.G. LR 20 features universal helmet hooks. Locate these hooks on the exterior of the backpack and use them to securely attach your helmet when not in use.

3. Operating

3.1 Drinking from the Hydration Tube

  1. Locate the bite valve at the end of the hydration tube.
  2. Gently bite down on the silicone valve and suck to draw water.
  3. After drinking, release the bite valve. The self-sealing design will prevent drips.
  4. Use the magnetic tube trap on the sternum strap to keep the tube secure and easily accessible.

3.2 Using Storage Compartments

The H.A.W.G. LR 20 offers multiple pockets and compartments for organizing your gear. Utilize the main compartment for larger items, and smaller zippered pockets for essentials like tools, snacks, and personal items. The waist belt also includes additional storage for quick-access items.

3.3 Deploying the Rain Cover

In adverse weather conditions, locate the integrated rain cover, typically stored in a dedicated pocket at the bottom of the backpack. Unfold and stretch the cover over the entire backpack to protect your gear from rain and moisture.

  2. Fill the reservoir with warm water and a mild soap solution.
  3. Use a reservoir brush (sold separately) to scrub the interior.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all soap residue is gone.
  5. For deep cleaning or to remove stubborn odors, use CamelBak cleaning tablets (sold separately).

4.2 Cleaning the Hydration Tube and Bite Valve

  1. Disconnect the tube from the reservoir.
  2. Remove the bite valve from the tube.
  3. Clean the tube with a tube brush and warm soapy water.
  4. Clean the bite valve with warm soapy water, ensuring all parts are free of residue.
  5. Rinse all components thoroughly.

4.3 Cleaning the Backpack

The backpack itself should be spot cleaned with warm water and mild soap. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, or iron the backpack, as this can damage the materials and coatings. Air dry completely before storage.

4.4 Drying and Storage

Ensure all components (reservoir, tube, bite valve, and backpack) are completely dry before storing to prevent mold and mildew growth. Hang the reservoir upside down with the opening propped open to allow air circulation. Store the backpack in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Low Water Flow

  • Check the bite valve: Ensure it is not clogged or twisted. Gently bite down to open the valve.
  • Check the tube: Ensure the tube is not kinked or pinched.
  • Check the reservoir: Make sure there is sufficient water and the reservoir is not collapsed or compressed in a way that restricts flow.
  • Clean components: A dirty bite valve or tube can restrict flow. Refer to the maintenance section for cleaning instructions.

5.2 Leaks

  • Check the reservoir cap: Ensure it is securely tightened.
  • Check tube connections: Verify that the tube is firmly connected to the reservoir and the bite valve.
  • Inspect for damage: Examine the reservoir and tube for any punctures, tears, or cracks. If damaged, replacement parts may be necessary.
