5. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your barn door soft close kit. This is a hole-free version, meaning no drilling is required on the track itself.

5.1. Pre-Installation Check

  • Ensure your barn door track is clean and free of obstructions.
  • Confirm your door's weight is within the 88-132 pound range for optimal performance.
  • Verify the distance between the rail and the top of the door is no more than 0.6 inches. This is crucial for proper actuator engagement.

5.2. Attaching the Soft Close Mechanism

  1. Identify the desired stopping points for your door. The soft close mechanism should be positioned at the end of the track where the door will come to a gentle stop.
  2. Take one soft close mechanism. It is designed to be hidden behind the rail.
  3. Using the provided S-shape hooks, attach the soft close mechanism to the back of the barn door track. The hooks should securely grip the top edge of the track.
  4. Fasten the mechanism to the hooks using the supplied screws and the hex wrench. Ensure it is firmly secured and does not wobble.
  5. Repeat this process for the second soft close mechanism if you are installing one on each end of the track for a bidirectional soft close.

Figure 5: The soft close mechanism is designed to attach to the back of the track using S-hooks and screws, ensuring a secure, hole-free installation.

5.3. Installing the Actuators

The actuators are the small components that attach to the top edge of your barn door and trigger the soft close mechanism.

  1. Position the door on the track.
  2. Slide the door towards the installed soft close mechanism until it is fully closed (or fully open, depending on which end you are working on).
  3. Mark the exact point on the top edge of the door where the soft close mechanism's trigger arm makes contact.
  4. Attach an actuator to the top edge of the door at the marked position using the provided screws. Ensure the actuator is aligned to engage the soft close mechanism's trigger arm.
  5. If the distance between the installed rail and the door is greater than 0.8 inches, you may need to adjust the height of the actuator from 0.4 inches to 0.6 inches using the adjustment screw and wrench (refer to Figure 4).
  6. Repeat for the other side of the door if installing a second soft close mechanism.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the SMARTSTANDARD Barn Door Soft Close Kit operates automatically. As the barn door approaches its final closed (or open) position, the actuator attached to the door will engage with the soft close mechanism's trigger arm. This engagement activates the internal spring buffer damper, which gently slows the door's movement, bringing it to a quiet and controlled stop.

Figure 6: The trigger arm of the soft close mechanism, which is engaged by the actuator on the door.

The mechanism is designed for one-way operation per unit. If you have installed two mechanisms (one for closing and one for opening), the door will soft close in both directions.

7. Maintenance

The SMARTSTANDARD Barn Door Soft Close Kit requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-lasting performance.

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically wipe down the soft close mechanisms and the track with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris.
  • Check Fasteners: Every few months, inspect all screws and connections to ensure they remain tight. Re-tighten if necessary.
  • Lubrication: The internal components are pre-lubricated. Avoid applying additional lubricants unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer, as this could attract dust and hinder performance.
  • Inspect for Wear: Check the trigger arm and actuator for any signs of excessive wear or damage. If significant wear is observed, contact customer support for replacement parts.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your soft close kit, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Soft close not engagingActuator not aligned with mechanism; mechanism too far from door's path; actuator height incorrect.Adjust actuator position on the door; reposition soft close mechanism on the track; adjust actuator height (refer to Section 5.3).
Door not slowing down sufficientlyDoor weight exceeds capacity; mechanism damaged; improper installation.Verify door weight; inspect mechanism for damage; re-check installation steps.
Door stops abruptlyMechanism or track obstructed; actuator catching.Clear any obstructions from the track or mechanism; ensure actuator moves freely.
Noise during operationLoose fasteners; debris in mechanism or track.Tighten all screws; clean the mechanism and track.
