Setup
- Unpacking and Placement: Remove all packaging materials. Place the machine on a stable, level surface away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Ensure adequate space around the machine for ventilation and access to the water reservoir.
- Water Reservoir: Remove the water reservoir from the back of the machine. Fill it with fresh, cold, filtered water up to the 'MAX' line. Avoid using distilled or demineralized water as it can affect machine performance. Replace the reservoir securely.
- Initial Prime/Flush: Before first use, or after extended periods of inactivity, prime the machine. Turn on the machine using the power button (leftmost switch). Once the coffee ready light (middle light) illuminates, place a container under the steam wand and open the steam knob to release any air. Close the steam knob once water flows steadily. Then, place a container under the portafilter and press the coffee button (middle switch) to run water through the group head until water flows smoothly. This purges air from the system and preheats the machine.

Operating the Espresso Machine
Making Espresso
- Preheat: Ensure the machine is powered on and the coffee ready light is illuminated. The portafilter should be locked into the group head to preheat.
- Grind Coffee: Use fresh, high-quality coffee beans. Grind them to a fine consistency suitable for espresso. For the 58mm commercial portafilter, a fine, consistent grind is crucial.
- Dose and Tamp: Remove the portafilter. Place your chosen filter basket (single, double, or pressurized) into the portafilter. Dose the appropriate amount of ground coffee into the basket. Use the included tamper to apply even pressure, compacting the coffee into a level puck.
- Insert Portafilter: Wipe any loose grounds from the rim of the portafilter. Lock the portafilter firmly into the group head.
- Brew Espresso: Place your espresso cup(s) under the portafilter spouts. Press the coffee button (middle switch) to begin extraction. Observe the flow; a good shot should start with a dark stream, then lighten, producing a rich, reddish-brown crema. Stop the extraction when you reach your desired volume (typically 1-2 ounces per shot) or when the crema starts to thin.

Using the Commercial Steam Wand
- Activate Steam: After brewing your espresso, press the steam button (rightmost switch). Wait for the steam ready light to illuminate, indicating the boiler has reached steaming temperature.
- Purge Steam Wand: Before frothing, open the steam knob briefly to release any condensed water from the wand. Close the knob once only steam is emitted.
- Froth Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout. Submerge the steam wand tip just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob fully.
- Texturing Milk: Keep the tip near the surface to create a gentle hissing sound, incorporating air for microfoam. As the milk expands and the pitcher becomes warm to the touch, lower the wand deeper into the milk to create a swirling vortex, heating the milk without adding more air. Continue until the pitcher is too hot to comfortably hold (around 140-150°F or 60-65°C).
- Clean and Purge: Immediately after frothing, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Open the steam knob briefly again to purge any milk from inside the wand. Close the knob and turn off the steam button.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of your Gaggia Classic E24.
Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter: After each use, remove the portafilter and discard the coffee puck. Rinse the portafilter and filter basket under hot water. Wipe the group head screen with a damp cloth.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily.
- Steam Wand: Always wipe and purge the steam wand immediately after use to prevent milk buildup.
Weekly/Bi-Weekly Cleaning
- Backflushing: Use a blind filter basket (not included, but recommended) and espresso machine cleaning powder (e.g., Urnex Cafiza) to backflush the group head. Follow the cleaner's instructions for frequency and procedure. This helps remove coffee oils and residue from the group head and three-way solenoid valve.
Descaling (Every 2-3 Months or as Needed)
Descaling is essential to remove mineral buildup from the boiler and internal components. Use a dedicated espresso machine descaler (e.g., Gaggia Decalcifier Solution).
- Empty the water reservoir and fill it with the descaling solution mixed according to the product instructions.
- Place a large container under the group head and steam wand.
- Run about half of the solution through the group head by pressing the coffee button.
- Open the steam knob and run the remaining solution through the steam wand.
- Rinse the reservoir thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with clean water to flush out any descaler residue.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No water flow from group head | Empty water reservoir; air in pump; clogged group head. | Refill reservoir; prime machine (see Setup); clean group head. |
| No steam from wand | Steam button not activated; clogged wand; machine not up to temperature. | Activate steam button; clean wand tip; wait for steam ready light. |
| Weak or watery espresso | Coffee too coarse; insufficient dose; poor tamping; machine not hot enough. | Adjust grind finer; increase dose; tamp firmly and evenly; allow machine to fully preheat. |
| Excessive water in drip tray | Normal operation (3-way solenoid valve); overfilling portafilter. | Empty drip tray regularly; ensure proper dosing and tamping. |
