4. Setup and Rope Installation

Preparing for Use

Before each use, conduct a thorough visual inspection of the device. Check for any cracks, deformation, excessive wear, or corrosion on all components. Ensure that all moving parts, such as the handle and movable flange, operate smoothly without obstruction.

Rope Installation

  1. To install the rope, open the movable flange of the device. The design allows the device to remain connected to your harness during this step, preventing accidental drops.
  2. Carefully insert the semi-static rope (8.5 mm to 11 mm diameter) into the device, precisely following the engraved diagram on the descender.
  3. Once the rope is correctly positioned, securely close the movable flange until it clicks into place.
  4. Perform a function test by applying slight tension to the rope. Verify that the assisted braking system engages correctly and holds the rope firmly.

The device features a long connection hole, which is designed to allow a FREINO Z carabiner to be tilted. This feature ensures the descender remains securely attached and unmissable during transfers from material to snap crescent.

5. Operating Instructions

Controlled Descent

The assisted braking system of the PETZL STOP provides superior control during descent, making maneuvers smoother and more secure.

  1. Always maintain a firm and controlled grip on the free end of the rope below the device.
  2. To initiate descent, gradually pull the ergonomic handle. The speed of your descent is directly controlled by the amount of pressure you apply to the handle and the position of your free hand on the rope.
  3. To stop your descent, simply release the handle. The assisted braking system will automatically engage, bringing you to a controlled stop.
  4. For maneuvering past obstacles or navigating splits in the rope, the device's design allows for easier rope manipulation, enhancing efficiency during complex descents.

Maneuvering and Stopping

The handle is ergonomically oriented towards the user, providing optimal control over the rope's sliding. The handle's scaling also contributes to a comfortable and consistent descent experience.

6. Maintenance and Storage

Care and Inspection

Regular cleaning of your PETZL STOP descender is crucial, especially after use in dirty, sandy, or muddy environments. If necessary, use fresh water and a mild soap solution, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Ensure the device is completely dry before storage to prevent corrosion.

Inspection Points

  • Check all metal parts for any signs of cracks, deformation, deep scratches, or corrosion.
  • Inspect the cam and pulley for excessive wear, grooves, or any damage that could affect rope friction or device function.
  • Ensure the handle operates smoothly through its full range of motion and returns to its original position without sticking.
  • Verify that the movable flange opens and closes securely, and that its locking mechanism is fully functional.

Storage

Store the device in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and corrosive chemicals. Proper storage helps to prolong the lifespan of the device.
