The system utilizes activated carbon to effectively reduce chlorine, taste, and odor. Water flows through the system, passing through the activated carbon media, which traps impurities and delivers cleaner water to your home.

Setup and Installation
Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your AO Smith Whole House Water Filter System. Please read and follow all instructions in the owner's manual before beginning installation or servicing.
Important Safety Notes:
- DO NOT INSTALL AFTER THE WATER HEATER or on the hot water line.
- DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN FITTINGS; this may cause leakage and broken fittings.
- DO NOT USE PIPE DOPE; the use of pipe dope voids the warranty.
- Installation will vary based on each home's plumbing.
Tools and Contents Required:
Ensure you have the following tools and package contents ready:
- Channel Locks
- PVC Pipe Cutter
- Thread Seal Tape (NSF certified plumber's tape)
Package Contents:
- 3/4" Shut-Off Valve (1)
- 3/4" x 3" Schedule 80 Nipple (1)
- Hose Adapter (1)
Installation Steps:
Prep the System (Flushing): Connect a garden hose to the inlet port of the filter using the supplied hose adapter. Slowly turn on the water and allow the cloudy water to flow from the outlet into a suitable drainage area for 5 to 10 minutes. Keep the unit in an upright position at all times during this process.

Positioning: Disconnect the system from the garden hose and position it in the desired location for final installation. Remember, it must be installed where the main water line enters your home, before connecting to the water heater.
Turn Off Water Supply: Turn off the main water supply source to your home.
Prepare Fittings: Wrap your 3/4-inch male NPT fittings with NSF certified plumber's tape. Connect these fittings to the system's inlet and outlet. Ensure not to overtighten fittings, as this can cause leakage and damage.
Plumb the System: Cut into the main water supply line and plumb the system in. The specific plumbing configuration will vary based on your home's existing setup (copper, PVC, CPVC, steel, or PEX plumbing). Refer to the diagram below for a typical installation example.

Check for Leaks: Turn the water supply back on slowly and carefully check all connections for any leaks. Address any leaks immediately by re-tightening connections as needed (without overtightening).
Operating Instructions
Once installed, the AO Smith Whole House Water Filter operates automatically. Water flows through the system as it enters your home, providing filtered water to all fixtures. No manual operation is required for daily use.
Maintenance
The AO Smith Whole House Water Filter is designed for long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance. The central filter lasts for 6 years or 600,000 gallons, whichever comes first. No routine filter replacement is needed within this period for the main filter. Periodically inspect the system for any visible leaks or damage. If you have installed a pre-filter (sold separately), it will require more frequent replacement based on your water quality and usage.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your AO Smith Whole House Water Filter System, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Reduced Water Flow: Check if the main water supply valve is fully open. If a pre-filter is installed, it might be clogged and require replacement.
- Leaks: Ensure all fittings are properly tightened. Remember not to overtighten. If leaks persist, turn off the water supply and inspect the connections for any damage or improper sealing.
- Unfiltered Water/Taste & Odor Issues: Verify that the system is installed correctly in the main water line before any branches to ensure all water passes through the filter. If the system has been in use for close to 6 years or 600,000 gallons, the filter media may be exhausted and the unit may need replacement.
- Cloudy Water After Installation: This is normal during the initial flushing process. Ensure you have flushed the system for the recommended 5-10 minutes until the water runs clear.
For issues not resolved by these steps, please contact AO Smith customer support.
