2. Setup

2.1. Download the KETOSCAN App

For enhanced functionality and easy recording of your test results, download the KETOSCAN Mini mobile app. It is available on both the App Store and Google Play.

2.2. Device Pairing

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  2. Open the KETOSCAN Mini app.
  3. Press and hold the power button on the KETOSCAN Mini unit for 2 seconds to turn it on.
  4. In the app, select "KETOSCAN Mini" from the list of available Bluetooth devices to complete pairing.
  5. Ensure location services (GPS) are enabled on your smartphone and allow location sharing for proper app functionality.

2.3. Prepare for Testing

Extend the built-in mouthpiece. If you are the only user, you can use the built-in mouthpiece. For multiple users, it is recommended that each person use a disposable mouthpiece (available separately). Clean the mouthpiece with a new cotton swab or cloth. Do not use alcohol to clean the mouthpiece as it may interfere with the sensor.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Self-Diagnostic Test

The KETOSCAN Mini performs a patented self-diagnostic test to adjust the sensor's baseline using your exhaled breath, ensuring test accuracy. This test does not count towards the sensor's 300-test limit. The device may perform this test frequently, even for each test, which is normal for a sensitive medical device.

For accurate results, avoid the following situations for at least 30 minutes before testing:

  • Brushing teeth or using mouthwash.
  • Consuming candy or gum.
  • Smoking.
  • Eating food.
  • Drinking coffee, tea, or any beverage other than water.

Additionally, avoid testing if you have consumed a lot of alcohol in the past 24 hours, or if you are testing the morning after heavy drinking, as this may affect test results.

3.2. Main Test

  1. After successful pairing and self-diagnostic mode completion, the app will prompt you to analyze your breath.
  2. Take a small, normal breath.
  3. Gently blow into the mouthpiece for 3 seconds. The app will display an indicator bar to guide you.
  4. When the indicator bar reaches the top, stop blowing. Excessive blowing can lead to abnormally high readings.
  5. If the sample was obtained correctly, the unit will beep twice and the app will vibrate to confirm.

3.3. Tips for Accurate Readings

  • Environment: Avoid testing in environments with strong smells or gases (e.g., kitchen during cooking, bathroom after using aerosols). Keep the device in a clean, neutral environment.
  • Breath Technique: Always take a normal, shallow breath before blowing. Maintain a consistent blowing force for each test to ensure comparable results. Avoid holding your breath for extended periods before blowing, as this can increase acetone concentration.

4. Understanding Your Results

The KETOSCAN Mini displays your breath acetone concentration in Parts Per Million (PPM) on both the device's built-in white dot matrix display and the mobile app. The app also provides your approximate body fat burning rate and a brief comment about your ketosis level.

4.1. App Features for Data Tracking

The KETOSCAN app allows you to:

  • Record and monitor your acetone levels and weight daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Track your calories with photos of food consumed and note calories burned from exercise.
  • Sync data with Apple Health and Google Fit.
  • Set test reminders.
  • Share your data via email with your doctor or health coach.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Mouthpiece Cleaning

If you are the sole user of the device, you can clean the built-in mouthpiece with a new cotton swab or cloth. For hygiene, consider replacing the mouthpiece periodically or using disposable mouthpieces if sharing the device.

5.2. Sensor Replacement and Recalibration

To maintain optimal precision, the KETOSCAN Mini's sensor requires replacement and recalibration after 300 test cycles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The unit will lock after 300 tests, requiring you to send it back to the company for sensor replacement and recalibration. This service typically costs around $30.

6. Troubleshooting

If you experience inconsistent readings or frequent self-diagnostic mode prompts, consider the following:

  • Environmental Interference: Ensure you are testing in a clean environment free from strong odors, gases, or aerosols (e.g., avoid kitchens during cooking or bathrooms after using hairspray).
  • Breath Technique: Maintain a consistent and normal breath when blowing into the device. Avoid deep breaths or holding your breath before testing, as this can skew results.
  • Sensor Accuracy: If readings remain inconsistent despite following guidelines, the sensor may require recalibration or replacement. Contact customer support for assistance.
