3.1. Tools Required

  • Screwdriver (Phillips head)
  • Drill (if new mounting holes are needed)
  • Wire strippers (if wires need to be prepared)
  • Pencil

3.2. Pre-Installation Steps

  1. Turn off Power: Before beginning any work, turn off the power to your heating and cooling system at the main circuit breaker or fuse box.
  2. Remove Old Thermostat: Carefully remove the cover of your old thermostat. Take a picture of the wiring connections for reference.
  3. Label Wires: Use the provided cable labels to mark each wire according to its terminal designation on your old thermostat. If no labels are provided, use masking tape and a pen.
  4. Disconnect Wires: Disconnect the wires from the old thermostat terminals.
  5. Remove Old Mounting Plate: Unscrew and remove the old thermostat's mounting plate from the wall.

3.3. Mounting the New Thermostat

  1. Separate Thermostat: Gently separate the front display unit of the H725 from its backplate. This may require a gentle prying motion.
  2. Position Backplate: Hold the new thermostat's backplate against the wall, ensuring the wires come through the opening. Mark the new mounting holes with a pencil.
  3. Drill Holes: If necessary, drill pilot holes for the anchors. Insert the provided wall anchors.
  4. Secure Backplate: Route the wires through the backplate opening and secure the backplate to the wall using the provided screws. Ensure it is level.

3.4. Wiring Connections

Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the H725 backplate. Refer to the wiring diagrams below for specific heat pump system configurations.

Heagstat H725 Wiring Diagrams

Image 3.1: Detailed wiring diagrams for the Heagstat H725 thermostat, illustrating connections for typical 2H/1C heat pump systems with and without separate emergency heat, and conventional systems.

Important Wiring Notes:

  • Power Supply: The thermostat can be powered by 24VAC hardwire (C wire required) or 2 x AAA batteries. For optimal performance and backlight functionality, hardwiring is recommended.
  • Changeover Valve: Use either the O or B terminal for the changeover valve, depending on whether your system energizes the valve in cooling (O) or heating (B). Most heat pumps energize in cooling (O).
  • Jumper: In some systems with no emergency heat relay, a jumper may be used between E and W2. (Jumper not supplied)

3.5. Powering the Thermostat

  1. Install Batteries: If using battery power or as a backup, insert 2 new AAA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment located at the bottom front of the thermostat. Ensure correct polarity.
  2. Attach Front Unit: Carefully align the front display unit with the backplate and snap it into place.
  3. Restore Power: Turn the power back on at the main circuit breaker or fuse box.

When the reminder appears on the display, it indicates that your HVAC system's air filter may need inspection or replacement. Refer to your HVAC system's manual for filter replacement instructions.

5.3. Cleaning the Thermostat

Wipe the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your H725 thermostat.

6.1. No Display or Blank Screen

  • Check Batteries: Ensure fresh AAA batteries are installed correctly.
  • Check Power: Verify that the power to your HVAC system is on at the circuit breaker. If hardwired, check the C wire connection.

6.2. Heating/Cooling System Not Responding

  • Check System Mode: Ensure the SYSTEM switch is set to HEAT or COOL, not OFF.
  • Check Set Temperature: Make sure the set temperature is above the room temperature for heating or below for cooling.
  • Compressor Delay: The thermostat has a 5-minute compressor delay. Wait for 5 minutes after changing modes or adjusting temperature before expecting the system to start.
  • Wiring: Double-check all wiring connections against the diagrams in Section 3.4. Incorrect wiring is a common cause of system malfunction.
  • Compatibility: Reconfirm your HVAC system's compatibility (refer to Section 2).

6.3. Inaccurate Temperature Reading

  • Calibration: The thermostat supports room temperature calibration adjustment. Refer to the full installation manual for instructions on how to access and adjust this setting.
  • Location: Ensure the thermostat is not exposed to direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources that could affect its temperature sensor.

6.4. Programming Issues

  • Review Steps: Carefully re-read the programming instructions in Section 4.6.
  • Hold Function: Ensure the 'Hold' function is not active, as it overrides the schedule. Press 'Run Sched' to resume programming.
