4. Setup and Assembly

Before first use, some assembly and preparation are required.

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Check for any damage during transit.
  2. Handlebar Assembly: Attach the handlebar to the main unit using the provided bolts and knobs. Ensure it is securely fastened.
  3. Add Engine Oil: Fill the engine with the recommended type and amount of engine oil. Refer to the engine manual for specific details. Do not overfill.
  4. Add Fuel: Fill the fuel tank with fresh, unleaded petrol. Ensure the fuel cap is securely tightened.
  5. Cutting Height Adjustment: Adjust the cutting height to your desired level. The mower offers 4 levels, from 30 mm to 85 mm. This is typically done via a lever on each wheel axle.

Note: The mower is designed for mulching. If you intend to use the side discharge function, ensure the side discharge chute is correctly installed.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for safe and effective operation of your lawn mower.

5.1 Starting the Engine

  1. Ensure the spark plug cable is connected.
  2. Push the primer bulb (if present) 3-5 times until fuel is visible.
  3. Move the throttle lever to the "START" or "CHOKE" position.
  4. Hold the engine brake lever against the handlebar.
  5. Pull the starter cord firmly until the engine starts.
  6. Once the engine starts, move the throttle lever to the "RUN" position.

5.2 Mowing Techniques

  • Mulching: The mower is primarily designed for mulching. This involves finely chopping grass clippings and returning them to the lawn as natural fertilizer. For best mulching results, mow regularly and do not cut more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
  • Side Discharge: For taller grass or less frequent mowing, the side discharge function can be used. Attach the side discharge chute to direct clippings away from the mower.
  • Mow in overlapping rows to ensure even coverage.
  • Avoid sudden changes in direction.
  • When mowing on slopes, always mow across the face of the slope, never up and down. Exercise extreme caution.

5.3 Stopping the Engine

  • Release the engine brake lever. The engine should stop automatically.
  • If the engine does not stop, move the throttle lever to the "STOP" position.
  • After stopping, wait for all moving parts to come to a complete standstill before approaching the mower.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your AL-KO lawn mower.

6.1 After Each Use

  • Cleaning: Clean the cutting deck and exterior of the mower. Remove grass clippings and debris. Always disconnect the spark plug before cleaning.
  • Blade Inspection: Check the cutting blade for damage or excessive wear.

6.2 Regular Maintenance (Seasonal/Hours of Use)

  • Engine Oil: Check engine oil level before each use and change according to the engine manufacturer's recommendations (typically after the first 5 hours, then every 25-50 hours or annually).
  • Air Filter: Clean or replace the air filter as needed, especially in dusty conditions.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug annually. Replace if worn.
  • Blade Sharpening/Replacement: Have the cutting blade sharpened or replaced by a qualified service technician when it becomes dull or damaged. A balanced blade is crucial for smooth operation.
  • Fuel System: Drain fuel at the end of the season or use a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel degradation.

For detailed engine maintenance, refer to the separate engine manual provided by the engine manufacturer.
