4. Setup

The Firlarm BRJ-502 is designed for simple plug-and-play setup.

  1. Unpack the Device: Carefully remove the gas detector from its packaging.
  2. Remove Protective Cover: If present, remove any protective covers from the electrical prongs.
  3. Plug into Outlet: Insert the detector directly into a standard 110V-220V AC wall outlet.
  4. Initial Warm-up: Upon plugging in, the device will enter a preheating period, indicated by a blinking dash on the LED display. This process takes approximately 150-180 seconds (2-3 minutes). During this time, the sensor is calibrating. The device will emit two beeps and then display a blinking dash.
  5. Ready for Operation: Once the warm-up is complete, the LED display will show '0', indicating no gas detected and the device is ready for normal operation.

5. Operating Instructions

The detector continuously monitors gas levels and provides visual and audible alerts based on concentration.

LED Digital Display Readings:

  • '-' (Blinking Dash): Indicates the device is in preheating mode.
  • '0' to '2': Safe zone. Gas concentration is minimal or non-existent.
  • '3' to '9': Warning zone. Gas concentration is increasing. The device will trigger an audible alarm and red flashing lights. Action should be taken to investigate and ventilate.
  • 'A': Dangerous level. Gas concentration is critically high (exceeds 9% LEL). The alarm will be continuous and loud (85 dB), with rapid red flashing lights. Immediate evacuation and emergency services contact are required.

Audible Alarm:

The alarm sounds at 85 dB when gas concentration exceeds 3% LEL. The intensity of the alarm adjusts with increasing gas levels. The alarm will cease once gas concentrations return to safe levels.

6. Testing Procedure

It is recommended to test the detector periodically to ensure proper functionality.

  1. Ensure the device has completed its warm-up period and displays '0'.
  2. Bring a small amount of test gas (e.g., from a butane lighter, without igniting) close to the sensor.
  3. Slowly release the test gas.
  4. Observe the display: The value should change from '0' to a higher number (e.g., '3' or 'A'), accompanied by an increasing audible alarm and red flashing lights.
  5. Remove the test gas. The alarm should stop, and the display should return to '0' once gas levels normalize.
Three steps showing how to test the gas detector: plug in, bring a lighter near the sensor, and observe the alarm and display change.

7. Installation Guidelines

Proper placement is crucial for effective gas detection.

  • Choose a Suitable Power Outlet: Install the detector near gas appliances such as in the kitchen or boiler room, preferably about 30 cm (1 foot) away from the appliance.
  • Avoid Non-Ventilated Areas: Do not install near open windows, fans, or air vents to prevent false alarms or missed detection due to air currents dispersing gas.
  • Consider Gas Density: For natural gas (lighter than air), install the detector higher up, near the ceiling. For propane/LPG (heavier than air), install it lower, near the floor.
  • General Placement: Ideal for kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, RVs, and basements.

8. Maintenance

  • Regular Cleaning: Wipe the detector's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Avoid Obstructions: Ensure the sensor and vents are free from dust, debris, or any obstructions.
  • Periodic Testing: Test the alarm monthly using the procedure outlined in Section 6.
