1. Introduction
Welcome to the FORENSICS DETECTORS FD-90A-CO2 Carbon Dioxide Detector user manual. This device is engineered for precise measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, ranging from 0-100% volume, utilizing an advanced Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) dual-channel sensor. It is equipped with customizable audio, visual, and vibration alarms to alert users to preset CO2 levels. The detector features a robust, shock-proof, water-proof, dust-proof, and explosion-proof ABS housing, making it suitable for demanding environments. Each unit is NIST calibrated to ensure accuracy and reliability.

2. Safety Information
Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the FD-90A-CO2 detector. Failure to follow instructions may result in inaccurate readings, device damage, or personal injury.
- Carbon Dioxide Hazard: Carbon dioxide is an asphyxiant and can be dangerous at high concentrations. Ensure adequate ventilation when working in environments where CO2 levels may be elevated.
- Calibration: Regular calibration is essential to maintain the accuracy of the detector. Refer to the calibration section for instructions.
- Environmental Protection: The device is designed to be water-proof, dust-proof, and explosion-proof. However, avoid intentional submersion or exposure to extreme conditions beyond its specifications.
- Battery Safety: Use only the provided USB charger. Do not attempt to open or replace the internal Lithium Ion battery.
3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking the Device
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. The package should contain:
- FD-90A-CO2 Carbon Dioxide Detector

3.2 Charging the Battery
Before first use, fully charge the detector. Connect the provided USB charging cable to the device's USB port and to a compatible USB power source. The battery indicator on the display will show charging status. A full charge typically provides up to 10 hours of operation.
3.3 Initial Power On
Press and hold the power button (usually the central button) until the display illuminates. The device will perform a self-test and then enter normal operating mode, displaying the current CO2 concentration.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Power On/Off
- To Power On: Press and hold the power button for approximately 3 seconds.
- To Power Off: Press and hold the power button for approximately 3 seconds until the device shuts down.
4.2 Display Readings
The LCD screen displays the following information:
- CO2 Concentration: Shown as a percentage (0-100% vol) with 0.1% resolution.
- Temperature: Current ambient temperature.
- Time: Current time.
- Battery Indicator: Shows remaining battery life.
4.3 Alarm Functions
The FD-90A-CO2 features three types of alarms: audio, visual (LEDs), and vibration. These alarms activate when CO2 levels exceed user-defined thresholds.
- Adjusting Alarms: Refer to the detailed instructions in the included color manual for setting alarm thresholds and modes (e.g., silent, low, high).
- Alarm Logging: The device records alarm events with a digital time stamp.

4.4 Calibration
The FD-90A-CO2 offers zero and span calibration options. For optimal accuracy, regular calibration is recommended. The device comes with a NIST traceable calibration certificate.
For a visual guide on the calibration process and how the device detects CO2, please watch the following video:

4.5 Sampling Modes: Diffusion vs. Pump
The FD-90A-CO2 operates in diffusion mode by default, where air naturally enters the sensor. For specific applications, a gas sample pump may be required.
- Diffusion Mode: Suitable for general indoor air quality monitoring or large volume spaces. Place the detector in the desired area and allow approximately 60 seconds for readings to stabilize.
- Pump Mode: Recommended for localized point sampling, restricted volumes (e.g., tanks, pipes), or when actively searching for gas leaks (e.g., in heat exchangers or ventilation systems). An external gas sample pump (not included with this specific model, but available for other FORENSICS DETECTORS products) is used to draw air through a probe into the detector's sensor.
For a detailed explanation on when to use a gas sample pump, please refer to the following video:
Video 4.2: Explanation of when a gas sample pump is necessary for gas detectors, differentiating between diffusion and pumped sampling applications.
5. Maintenance
5.1 Cleaning
To clean the exterior of the detector, use a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the housing or internal components.
5.2 Battery Care
To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the device frequently. Recharge the battery when the low battery indicator appears. Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
5.3 Calibration Frequency
For critical applications, it is recommended to calibrate the FD-90A-CO2 detector regularly, typically every 6 to 12 months, or as required by local regulations and industry standards. Refer to the calibration certificate for specific recommendations.

6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FD-90A-CO2 detector, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Device Not Powering On: Ensure the battery is fully charged. If the issue persists, contact support.
- Inaccurate Readings: Perform a calibration. Ensure the sensor inlet is not obstructed.
- Alarms Not Activating: Check alarm settings in the menu to ensure thresholds are correctly set and alarm modes (audio, visual, vibration) are enabled.
- No Gas Flow (with external pump): Verify that the tubing is securely connected and not kinked. Check the external pump for proper operation.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact FORENSICS DETECTORS customer support.
