- Add Rocks: Fill the barrel with rough rocks. For optimal tumbling, the barrel should be filled to about 2/3 to 3/4 full. A mix of different sized rocks is ideal.
- Add Grit: Refer to the instruction booklet for the precise amount of grit for each stage. Add the specified grit packet for the current stage.
- Add Water: Add water until it just covers the top layer of rocks and grit. Do not overfill.
- Seal Barrel: Securely close the barrel lid, ensuring a leak-resistant seal.
- Place on Tumbler: Place the loaded barrel onto the tumbler machine's rollers.
Setting Timer and Speed
- Power On: Press the ON/OFF RESET button to turn on the tumbler.
- Set Days: Use the DAYS +/- buttons to set the desired tumbling duration. The recommended duration for each stage is typically 7-9 days, but refer to your instruction booklet for specific guidance.
- Set Speed: Use the SPEED +/- buttons to select the desired tumbling speed. The instruction booklet will provide recommendations for each stage.
- Start Tumbling: The tumbler will begin operating automatically once settings are applied.
After each stage, carefully empty the barrel, rinse the rocks and barrel thoroughly, and clean any grit residue. Then, proceed to the next stage with the appropriate grit.
Maintenance
- Barrel Cleaning: After each tumbling stage, thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the barrel, as well as the lid, to remove all grit residue. Running the barrel with warm water and a drop of dish soap for an hour can help remove fine grit particles.
- Rock Cleaning: Rinse rocks thoroughly between stages to prevent cross-contamination of grit sizes. Use the provided mesh strainer for this purpose.
- Motor Belt Inspection: Periodically check the motor belt for wear and tear. If the belt appears stretched or cracked, replace it with the spare motor belt provided in your kit.
- General Cleaning: Keep the tumbler machine clean and free of dust and debris. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth as needed.
- Storage: When not in use, store the tumbler and its components in a clean, dry place.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tumbler is not turning on. | Power cord not properly connected; power outlet issue. | Ensure power cord is securely plugged into the tumbler and a working outlet. Try a different outlet. |
| Barrel is not rotating. | Motor belt is loose or broken; barrel overloaded; rollers are dirty. | Check and replace the motor belt if necessary. Reduce the amount of rocks in the barrel. Clean the rollers. |
| Rocks are not polishing well. | Insufficient grit; incorrect water level; tumbling time too short; rocks too large/angular. | Ensure correct grit amounts are used for each stage. Adjust water level. Extend tumbling time. Use smaller, rounder rocks for best results. Consider adding ceramic media for cushioning. |
| Tumbler is too loud. | Normal operation noise; uneven surface; barrel not balanced. | Rock tumblers produce noise during operation. Ensure the tumbler is on a flat, stable surface. Check if the barrel is properly seated and balanced. Consider placing it in a less frequented area. |
