3. How the System Works
The AO Smith Clean Water Machine utilizes a multi-stage filtration process to purify water. The Reverse Osmosis Membrane (Stage 2) is a critical component in this process.

Image 3.1: A diagram showing the four stages of water filtration in the AO Smith system. Stage 1 is a Carbon Filter, Stage 2 is Reverse Osmosis, Stage 3 is Claryum® Filtration, and Stage 4 is Remineralizer + Microbial Filtration.
- Stage 1: Carbon Filter - Reduces chlorine, taste, and odor prior to Reverse Osmosis filtration.
- Stage 2: Reverse Osmosis Membrane - Advanced membrane technology reduces particles smaller than one micron, such as fluoride, chromium, and mercury.
- Stage 3: Claryum® Filtration - Reduces 77 contaminants including chlorine, VOC's, pesticides, herbicides, and more.
- Stage 4: Remineralizer + Microbial Filtration - Returns healthy minerals lost in the reverse osmosis process, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, while reducing bacteria and viruses.
4. Installation Instructions
4.1. Preparing for Replacement
- Turn off the water supply to your Reverse Osmosis system.
- Depressurize the system by opening the filtered water faucet.
- Locate the existing RO Membrane cartridge.
4.2. Disconnecting Quick-Connect Fittings
Before removing the old membrane, you may need to disconnect quick-connect fittings, particularly the 90-degree elbow connection to the drain line.

Image 4.1: Illustration of the quick-connect fitting disconnection process. Gently push the lock sleeve down with two fingers, then pull the elbow to remove.
- Gently push the "Lock Sleeve" down with two fingers.
- Pull the elbow to remove the connection.
4.3. Replacing the RO Membrane
When replacing your RO Membrane, it is crucial to reuse the existing 90-degree elbow connection to the drain line. Do NOT discard this connector with the old membrane.

Image 4.2: Visual guide for attaching the elbow to the new RO Membrane. The elbow, which includes a flow restrictor, must be connected to the replacement membrane.
- Carefully remove the old RO Membrane cartridge from the system.
- Detach the 90-degree elbow connection from the old membrane. This elbow contains the flow restrictor and is essential for proper system function.
- Attach the 90-degree elbow connection to the new replacement RO Membrane. Ensure it is securely connected.
- Insert the new RO Membrane with the attached elbow into the system.
- Reconnect any other necessary fittings.
- Slowly turn on the water supply to the system.
- Check for any leaks. If leaks are present, turn off the water supply and re-secure the connections.
- Flush the system according to your main system's instruction manual to prepare it for use.
Important Note:
- Compatibility: This membrane is specifically for the AO-US-RO-MB-4000 system. It is NOT compatible with SmartFlow Systems.
- Elbow Connection: The new membrane does NOT include the 90-degree elbow connection to the drain. You MUST use the existing 90-degree elbow. Do NOT discard the connector with the old membrane.
5. Maintenance
5.1. Replacement Frequency
The AO Smith Reverse Osmosis Membrane (AO-US-RO-MB-4000) typically lasts approximately 1 year. Actual replacement frequency may vary based on water quality and usage.
Regular replacement ensures optimal performance and continued reduction of contaminants.
5.2. General Care
- Always use genuine AO Smith replacement filters for certified contaminant removal.
- Refer to your main system's instruction manual for overall system maintenance and filter replacement schedules for other stages.

7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues related to the RO Membrane replacement. For comprehensive system troubleshooting, refer to your main AO Smith RO system manual.
7.1. Low Water Flow After Replacement
- Check for proper installation: Ensure the new membrane is correctly seated and all connections are secure.
- Verify elbow connection: Confirm that the 90-degree elbow with the flow restrictor was properly transferred from the old membrane to the new one and is not clogged.
- System flush: Ensure the system has been adequately flushed after installation as per the main system's instructions.
- Tank pressure: If your system includes a storage tank, check its air pressure. Low tank pressure can lead to reduced flow. Consult your system manual for instructions on checking and adjusting tank pressure.
- Other filters: Check the replacement schedule for other filters in your system (e.g., carbon pre-filters). Clogged pre-filters can impact RO membrane performance.
7.2. Leaks After Replacement
- Inspect all connections: Carefully check all quick-connect fittings and threaded connections for tightness.
- O-rings: Ensure all O-rings are properly seated and not pinched or damaged.
- Re-seat membrane: Remove and re-insert the membrane to ensure it is fully seated.
7.3. Poor Water Taste/Odor
- System flush: Ensure the system has been thoroughly flushed after installation. New membranes can sometimes release harmless carbon fines or air during initial use.
- Other filters: Verify the replacement schedule for other filters (e.g., carbon filters, remineralizer). If these are old, they may be contributing to taste or odor issues.
