Setup Instructions
- Unpack the Feeder: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all parts are present: feeder tube, lid, hanging bail, base, and T-perches.
- Attach Hanging Bail: Insert the metal hanging bail through the designated hole in the center of the lid.
- Fill with Birdseed:
- Twist the lid counter-clockwise to unlock and remove it from the feeder tube.
- Fill the clear tube with your preferred birdseed. The feeder has a capacity of 4.25 pounds.
- Replace the lid, aligning the tabs, and twist clockwise to secure it.
- Select a Hanging Location: Choose a sturdy branch or shepherd's hook. For optimal squirrel deterrence, hang the feeder at least 5 feet away from any surfaces (trees, fences, buildings) that squirrels could use to jump onto the feeder.
- Hang the Feeder: Use the attached hanging bail to suspend the feeder securely.
Operating Instructions
The Yankee Blocker Bird Feeder is designed with a weight-sensitive collapsing base. When a heavy animal, such as a squirrel, attempts to access the feeding ports, its weight causes the base to lower, blocking access to the seed. Lighter birds can perch on the T-perches and feed without triggering the mechanism.
- Bird Feeding: Birds will land on the T-perches located around the base. These perches provide a stable platform for birds to access the seed ports.
- Squirrel Deterrence: The collapsing base mechanism is calibrated to activate under the weight of squirrels, preventing them from reaching the seed.
Maintenance
- Regular Cleaning: To ensure the health of visiting birds and proper feeder function, clean the feeder regularly.
- Remove the lid and empty any remaining seed.
- Disassemble the feeder components (tube, base, perches) as much as possible.
- Wash all parts with a mild soap solution and warm water. A diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) can be used for disinfection, followed by thorough rinsing.
- Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembling and refilling with fresh seed.
- Lid Operation: If the lid becomes difficult to twist or remove over time, clean the threads and contact points thoroughly. Avoid using lubricants that could be harmful to birds.
