Figure 2.1: Univex PPRESS1R Panini Press with the top plate lifted, showing the ribbed cast iron cooking surfaces and control knobs on the front panel.
Key Components:
- Ribbed Cast Iron Plates: Top and bottom plates designed for even heat distribution and characteristic grill marks.
- Temperature Control Knob: Adjusts the cooking temperature.
- Power Indicator Light: Illuminates when the unit is powered on.
- Ready Indicator Light: Illuminates when the unit has reached the set temperature.
- Heat-Resistant Handle: For safely lifting and lowering the top plate.
- Drip Tray (removable): Collects excess grease and food particles for easy cleaning.
3. Setup and First Use
- Unpacking: Carefully remove the panini press from its packaging. Retain packaging for future storage or transport.
- Inspection: Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during shipping. Do not operate if damaged.
- Placement: Place the panini press on a stable, heat-resistant, and level surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Maintain a safe distance from walls and other appliances.
- Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth. Clean the cast iron plates with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly. Do not immerse the unit in water.
- Seasoning the Plates (Optional but Recommended): For optimal non-stick performance and longevity, lightly coat the cast iron plates with a high-smoke-point cooking oil (e.g., vegetable oil, grapeseed oil). Heat the unit to a medium temperature (around 350°F / 175°C) for 10-15 minutes. Turn off and allow to cool completely. Wipe off any excess oil. Repeat this process 2-3 times.
- Power Connection: Ensure the unit's power requirements (1000 watts) match your electrical outlet. Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
4. Operating Instructions
Preheating:
- Plug the unit into a suitable power outlet. The Power Indicator Light will illuminate.
- Turn the Temperature Control Knob to your desired cooking temperature. Recommended temperatures vary based on food type.
- Allow the unit to preheat. The Ready Indicator Light will illuminate when the set temperature is reached. This typically takes 10-15 minutes.
Cooking:
- Once preheated, carefully lift the top plate using the heat-resistant handle.
- Place your food item (e.g., sandwich, panini) onto the center of the bottom ribbed plate.
- Gently lower the top plate onto the food item. The floating hinge design allows the top plate to adjust to different food thicknesses.
- Cook for the desired duration, checking periodically for doneness. Cooking times will vary based on food type, thickness, and desired crispness.
- Once cooked, carefully lift the top plate and remove the food using a heat-resistant spatula or tongs. Avoid using metal utensils that could scratch the plates.
- Close the top plate to maintain heat if cooking additional items.
After Use:
- Turn the Temperature Control Knob to the "OFF" position.
- Unplug the unit from the power outlet.
- Allow the panini press to cool completely before cleaning or storing.
5. Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your panini press.
Daily Cleaning:
- Ensure the unit is unplugged and completely cool.
- Remove the drip tray and empty any collected grease or food particles. Wash the drip tray with warm, soapy water, rinse, and dry thoroughly.
- Using a non-abrasive brush or scraper, gently remove any large food debris from the ribbed plates.
- Wipe the plates with a damp cloth. For stubborn residue, a small amount of mild dish soap can be used, followed by wiping with a clean, damp cloth to remove all soap residue.
- Wipe the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Ensure all parts are completely dry before closing the unit or storing.
Important Notes:
- Do NOT immerse the panini press in water or any other liquid.
- Do not use steel wool, abrasive cleaners, or sharp metal objects on the cooking plates, as this can damage the non-stick coating and cast iron surface.
- Regularly check the power cord for any signs of damage.
