4. Assembly and Initial Setup

The Holzfforma G388 is supplied as a power head only. You will need to attach a compatible guide bar and saw chain. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Remove Chain Sprocket Cover: Take off the chain sprocket cover and loosen the chain adjuster screw.
  2. Assemble Bar and Chain: Carefully assemble the guide bar and saw chain. Ensure the chain is oriented correctly for cutting (check the direction arrows on the chain).
  3. Re-attach Chain Sprocket Cover: Place the chain sprocket cover back on. Make sure the cover hole aligns with the bar stud and the chain catcher is properly seated in the bumper spike hole.
  4. Adjust Chain Tension: Adjust the tensioning screw clockwise until there is approximately 1 cm of chain sag in the underside of the bar. The chain should be snug but still able to be pulled freely by hand.
  5. Tighten Bar Nut: Securely tighten the bar nuts to hold the guide bar and chain in place.

Before first use, fill the fuel tank with the correct fuel mixture and the oil tank with appropriate bar oil.

5. Operating Instructions

Fuel and Oil

The G388 chainsaw requires a fuel mixture of 25 parts unleaded fuel to 1 part 2-stroke oil (25:1 ratio). Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 90 RON or higher. For chain lubrication, use SAE#10W-30 or similar bar oil.

Starting the Engine

Follow these steps to start your chainsaw:

  1. Prepare for Start: Simultaneously press the throttle trigger locknut and the throttle trigger. Then, set the master control lever to the choke position (cold start).
  2. First Pulls: Pull the starter rope firmly and smoothly, a maximum of 5 times.
  3. Adjust Lever: Once the engine briefly fires or sputters, move the master control lever to the starting acceleration position (half-choke).
  4. Final Pulls: Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts and runs.

Once the engine is running, allow it to warm up for a few moments before engaging the throttle for cutting. Always hold the chainsaw with both hands during operation.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your chainsaw. Perform these checks and tasks regularly:

  • Chain Sharpening: Keep the saw chain sharp. A dull chain increases effort and kickback risk.
  • Chain Tension: Check and adjust chain tension frequently, especially during initial use.
  • Air Filter: Clean the air filter regularly to maintain engine performance.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect and clean the spark plug. Replace if worn or fouled.
  • Guide Bar: Clean the guide bar groove and oil holes. Flip the guide bar periodically to ensure even wear.
  • Fuel and Oil Caps: Inspect fuel and oil caps for damage or worn rubber seals. Replace if necessary to prevent leaks.
  • Clutch Assembly: Periodically check the clutch spring and assembly for wear or damage. A broken clutch spring can cause the chain to spin at idle.

7. Troubleshooting

General
Engine does not start Incorrect starting procedure, no fuel, fouled spark plug, clogged fuel filter. Follow starting instructions carefully. Check fuel level and mixture. Clean/replace spark plug. Inspect fuel filter.
Chain does not move at idle Idle speed too low, worn clutch spring. Adjust idle speed. Inspect and replace clutch spring if broken.
Chain spins at idle Idle speed too high, broken clutch spring. Adjust idle speed. Inspect and replace clutch spring if broken.
Insufficient bar oil flow Clogged oil pump, blocked oil channels. Clean oil pump and oil channels. Ensure correct bar oil is used.
Bar nuts strip easily Over-tightening, low-quality material. Tighten carefully to specified torque. Consider replacing with higher quality nuts if issues persist.
Fuel/Oil caps leak Worn rubber seals, damaged cap. Replace worn rubber seals or entire cap.
