Introduction
The Vostok Komandirskie watch is a classic mechanical hand-winding timepiece with a rich history, originating from a Moscow watch-making plant evacuated to Chistopol in 1942. Vostok became an official supplier for the Soviet Union's Defense Department in 1965, leading to the creation of the renowned "Komandirskie" watch. This timepiece is known for its precision, reliability, and durability, embodying a functional and clear-cut design. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your Vostok Komandirskie watch.

Setup
Initial Winding
Your Vostok Komandirskie is a mechanical hand-winding watch and requires manual winding to operate. To wind the watch:
- Gently unscrew the crown counter-clockwise until it is loose and can be pulled out. This is Position 1 (fully unscrewed).
- In Position 1, turn the crown clockwise. You will feel resistance as the mainspring winds. Continue winding until you feel a firm stop. Do not force it past this point to avoid damage.
- A fully wound watch will run for at least 31 hours.
Setting the Time and Date
To set the time and date:
- Unscrew the crown (Position 1).
- Gently pull the crown out to Position 2 (with a click). In this position, you can adjust the time by turning the crown.
- To set the date, rotate the hands past midnight until the date changes. Then, move the hands back to approximately 9 PM and forward again past midnight to advance the date. Repeat this process until the correct date is displayed. There is no quick-set date function.
- Once the time and date are set, push the crown back in and screw it clockwise tightly against the watch case to ensure water resistance.

Operating Your Watch
Daily Use
For optimal performance, it is recommended to wind your Vostok Komandirskie watch daily, preferably at the same time each day. This ensures consistent power reserve and accurate timekeeping.
Water Resistance (30m / 3 Bar)
Your Vostok Komandirskie watch is rated for 30 meters (3 Bar) water resistance. This rating indicates its ability to withstand static pressure, not depth during active water use. It is suitable for:
- Accidental splashing, such as washing hands.
- Exposure to rain and snow.
Important: 30m WR watches are not designed for prolonged active use in water, such as swimming, showering, or diving. Always ensure the crown is fully screwed down to maintain water resistance.
Maintenance and Care
General Care
- Avoid exposing your watch to extreme temperatures or sudden temperature changes.
- Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields, which can affect timekeeping accuracy.
- Clean the watch case and strap regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For the leather strap, avoid excessive moisture.
- Do not open the watch case yourself, as this can compromise its water resistance and internal mechanisms.
Servicing
Like all mechanical watches, your Vostok Komandirskie will benefit from periodic servicing by a qualified watchmaker. The recommended service interval can vary, but typically every 3-5 years is advisable to ensure longevity and accuracy.
Troubleshooting
Watch Not Working After Winding
If your Vostok watch does not start working immediately after winding, it may need a gentle nudge to get the balance wheel moving. This is common for mechanical movements that have been stationary for a period.
- Give the watch a good shake.
- Alternatively, gently knock it on your palm or a soft surface.
This process helps to start the watch. If it still does not operate, ensure it is fully wound and the crown is properly screwed down.
Loose Crown Feature
It is normal for the crown of Vostok watches to feel loose or have some play when unscrewed. This is a design feature intended to reduce the risk of the movement being pushed back into the case, which could cause damage. The crown is designed to hang in a single point connection. This play contributes to the watch's durability and ease of use. Always ensure the crown is screwed down tightly after setting the time or winding to maintain water resistance.
