Setup and Installation

Tools Required: Screwdriver set, Torx wrench set (if applicable for your chainsaw model), spark plug wrench, feeler gauge (for coil gap setting).

  1. Prepare the Chainsaw: Ensure the chainsaw is off, cooled, and the spark plug wire is disconnected. Remove the engine cover(s) to access the ignition coil and spark plug.
  2. Remove Old Spark Plug: Use a spark plug wrench to carefully remove the old spark plug.
  3. Remove Old Ignition Coil: Disconnect any electrical wires attached to the old ignition coil. Note their routing for reinstallation. Unscrew the mounting bolts holding the old coil in place and carefully remove it. Pay attention to how the spark plug wire and other wires pass through any grommets.
  4. Install New Ignition Coil:
    • Position the new Kizut ignition coil in the mounting location.
    • Important Fitment Note: Some Stihl chainsaw models or specific units may have slight variations in casing or flywheel clearance. Carefully align the new coil to ensure it sits flush and does not interfere with the flywheel or other components. Verify that the mounting bolts align correctly. Do not force the coil into place. If significant interference is observed, re-check compatibility or consult a professional.
    • Insert the mounting bolts but do not tighten them fully yet.
    • Set Coil Gap: Place a non-magnetic feeler gauge (typically 0.008-0.012 inches or 0.2-0.3 mm, refer to your chainsaw's specific service manual for exact specifications) between the ignition coil and the flywheel magnets. Rotate the flywheel until the magnets are directly under the coil.
    • Press the coil firmly against the feeler gauge and tighten the mounting bolts securely. Remove the feeler gauge.
    • Reconnect all electrical wires to the new ignition coil, ensuring they are routed correctly and securely. If wires pass through a grommet, carefully guide them to avoid damage.
  5. Install New Spark Plug: Thread the new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to prevent cross-threading. Once finger-tight, use a spark plug wrench to tighten it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn, or according to your chainsaw's specifications. Do not overtighten.
  6. Connect Spark Plug Boot: Firmly push the spark plug boot from the new ignition coil onto the new spark plug terminal until it clicks into place.
  7. Reassemble: Replace any removed engine covers.

Operating

After installation, perform a test start of your chainsaw according to the manufacturer's instructions. The chainsaw should start reliably and run smoothly. If you experience starting difficulties or erratic engine behavior, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Maintenance

  • Spark Plug Inspection: Periodically inspect the spark plug for wear, carbon buildup, or damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Wire Connections: Ensure all electrical connections to the ignition coil remain secure and free from corrosion.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the area around the ignition coil and spark plug clean and free of debris to prevent overheating or electrical issues.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Chainsaw does not start or starts with difficulty. No spark or weak spark.Check spark plug connection. Inspect spark plug for fouling or damage. Verify coil gap setting. Ensure all wires are securely connected.
Engine runs rough or misfires.Intermittent spark or incorrect fuel mixture.Check spark plug condition. Ensure spark plug boot is fully seated. Verify coil gap. Consult chainsaw manual for fuel mixture.
Coil does not fit properly.Minor manufacturing variations or specific chainsaw model differences.Carefully re-check alignment and clearance with the flywheel. Ensure no components are obstructing the coil. Do not force installation. If significant modification is required, consult a professional or verify part compatibility.
