4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The multimeter requires a 9V battery (included) for operation.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
- Loosen the screw(s) on the cover and remove it.
- Connect the 9V battery to the battery snap connector, observing correct polarity.
- Place the battery inside the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw(s).
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
Always connect the test leads correctly for accurate and safe measurements.
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (common) input jack.
- For most measurements (voltage, resistance, diode, continuity, and small current), insert the red test lead into the VΩmA input jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 10A), insert the red test lead into the 10A input jack.
5. Operating Instructions
Before taking any measurement, ensure the test leads are connected correctly and the rotary switch is set to the appropriate function and range.
5.1 Measuring DC Voltage (DCV)
Ranges: 200mV, 2V, 20V, 200V, 1000V
- Connect the black lead to COM and the red lead to VΩmA.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCV range. If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range (1000V) and decrease as necessary.
- Connect the test probes across the component or circuit to be measured, observing polarity.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
5.2 Measuring AC Voltage (ACV)
Ranges: 2V, 20V, 200V, 750V
- Connect the black lead to COM and the red lead to VΩmA.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired ACV range. If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range (750V) and decrease as necessary.
- Connect the test probes across the AC voltage source.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
5.3 Measuring DC Current (DCA)
Ranges: 200µA, 2mA, 20mA, 200mA, 10A
- Connect the black lead to COM. For ranges up to 200mA, connect the red lead to VΩmA. For the 10A range, connect the red lead to 10A.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DCA range. Start with the highest range if the current is unknown.
- Disconnect power to the circuit. Open the circuit where the current is to be measured and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
- Apply power to the circuit and read the current value on the LCD display.
- After measurement, disconnect power, remove the multimeter, and restore the circuit.
5.4 Measuring Resistance (Ω)
Ranges: 200Ω, 2kΩ, 20kΩ, 200kΩ, 2MΩ, 20MΩ
- Connect the black lead to COM and the red lead to VΩmA.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired Ω range.
- Ensure the component to be measured is de-energized. For in-circuit measurements, ensure the component is isolated from the circuit.
- Connect the test probes across the resistor or component.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
5.5 Diode Measurement
- Connect the black lead to COM and the red lead to VΩmA.
- Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol (usually next to the continuity symbol).
- Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode. The display will show the forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes).
- Reverse the probes. The display should show 'OL' (Overload) for a good diode, indicating high resistance in reverse bias.
5.6 Continuity Test
- Connect the black lead to COM and the red lead to VΩmA.
- Set the rotary switch to the Continuity symbol (usually a speaker icon).
- Connect the test probes across the circuit or component to be tested.
- If the resistance is below approximately 50Ω (indicating continuity), the multimeter will emit an audible beep. The display will also show the resistance value.
5.7 Transistor Test (hFE)
This multimeter includes a transistor test socket for measuring the DC current gain (hFE) of NPN and PNP transistors.
- Set the rotary switch to the hFE position.
- Identify the type (NPN or PNP) and pinout (Emitter, Base, Collector) of the transistor.
- Insert the transistor leads into the corresponding holes in the hFE socket on the multimeter.
- Read the hFE value on the LCD display.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Battery Replacement
When the battery symbol appears on the display, the 9V battery needs to be replaced to ensure accurate readings. Follow the steps in Section 4.1 Battery Installation to replace the battery.
6.2 Cleaning and Storage
- To clean the multimeter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
- If the multimeter is not to be used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage and corrosion.
- Store the multimeter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your multimeter, refer to the table below for common problems and solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low battery | Replace the 9V battery. |
| Incorrect readings | Incorrect range selected; Damaged test leads; Low battery | Select appropriate range; Check/replace test leads; Replace battery. |
| "OL" (Overload) displayed | Measurement exceeds selected range; Open circuit (for continuity/resistance) | Select a higher range; Check circuit connection. |
| No continuity beep | Resistance too high; Open circuit | Ensure circuit is closed and resistance is low. |
